How to connect the wiring to the right connections in a M9040n When the power supply is connected to the mother board the power supply works and power stays running. when I connect all the other wires...

it's a simple problem...... in most cases. 11 YEAR OLD PC
does the PSU fan spin, it must ! turned on. when it works?
in real shop we have spare PSU in the shelf there, omg it works or not?
we hot wire the PSU under suspicion. , the 1 jumper wire.

http://www.pcdied.com/power.html#Jumper

my guess is that works, the paper clip test I call it.

so you find hat all PSU have lots of wires, sure. looking inside.
the big wires matter, not the tiny if power turns on .

well, the big bundle goes to the mobo. 24 pins, (see jumper above)
the other cables run many things.

why not just try them one at a time to see which one is shorted?
easy no?, called fault isolation techniques.

pull floppy power, (i bet you dont have one)
pull all HDD, power.
pull DVD (cd) power, or BRD. power, blue ray?
if you have the VGA aux cable there,??? i cant see in your PC
then pull that next , doing so will kill the VGA card dead, or it goes mad.
so pull that VGA card (called an option addin card)
NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS (and option DAY 1 new)
if yes, best i can tell it does not have the 6 pin AUX power
and means the card uses less than 75watts (flea power)

then pull all other PCI or express cards.

does the CPU fan spin, and is clean and heat sink clean?
the VGA card too can have fan is it dead, or packed in lint.
next pull ram, run no ram, the 1 stick at a time in bank 0
if all sticks work in bank 0 try all sticks, if you have 4 stick
add the 1 at a time.
see?

is the RTC coin cell battery fresh?. they most times never last 11 years, it needs changing first. if not BIOS goes NUTS.
all PCs over say 7 years, best to do that.

bios nuts,= PC nuts, and owners hair falls out.

now learn this,
lacking spare power supply PSU
diagnosis can be very very hard
what if the PSU you have is weak.?
  • PSU come on the following forms.
  • GOOD
  • BAD/ dead. ( add huge list here, ask)
  • weak (yes weak happens)
  • overheats fan dead or packed full of lint after 11 years never cleaned.
So when any PSU fails like this
its a weak PSU or the PSU is begin overloaded.(no spare PSU?)
we use a magic tool to find overloads called a AMMETER
(in fact mine is DC clamp on type, super easy to use)

My GATEWAY DX4840-11e did not power up, so I CHATTED with ONLINE support and they resolved it with me performing a POWER DRAIN. That worked temporarily because when I powered up the next day, I have to...

CMOS Checksum Error, and having to set the Date/Time repeatedly, generally points to a bad CMOS battery.
If it were I, I would replace the battery with a new one. However this is what I would do.

Your computer is still under warranty. Opening the computer case may void the warranty.
Therefore you may not come to the same decision that I would.

On the motherboard is a round flat battery about the size of a U.S. Nickle.
It's a type of watch battery. Generally a CR2032.

Example;

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CR2032_battery

A CMOS battery will generally last from 4 to 7 years. Perhaps the CMOS battery installed in your Gateway is bad. Just a lemon that came from the battery factory.

The battery holder on the motherboard is rounded in shape to fit the battery, and has a metal clip inside. There are different styles of fastening used in the clip design, but generally a small tab of the clip is eased to the outside edge of the battery holder, thereby releasing the battery.

This article will 'shed more light' on the various styles of CMOS battery holders,

http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/81

Proper procedure in order to replace the CMOS battery;

1) Unplug the computer from power.
[NOTE* Always unplug the power cord from the surge protector, and not from the computer's Power Supply. (Back of the computer) Unplugging from the Power Supply MAY cause a voltage spike. ]

2) Observe Anti-Static Precautions

Anti-Static Precautions:
Your body carries Static electricity.
Static will fry out (Short Circuit) the delicate hardware components inside a computer.
ALWAYS relieve your body of Static BEFORE working on a computer.

Computer unplugged from power, computer case open, TOUCH the metal frame of the open computer case.
This action will relieve your body of Static.

Should you leave your computer in the middle of working on it, be SURE to Touch the metal frame again upon your return.

3) Opening the computer case:
This is Gateway Support, and the Support Documents page for the Gateway DX4840 series of Desktop Computers,

http://support.gateway.com/us/en/s/desktop/2010/gateway/dx/dx4840/DX4840nv.shtml

I would like you to click on - Product Views.
Now click on Rear View.

Observing the rear of the computer look at the right side. Along the edge down towards the bottom is a screw. This screw is removed, then the Side Panel is pulled towards the rear of the computer.
(There is a raised portion, or hump, in the Side Panel for placing your fingers)

If your Gateway DX4840-11e desktop computer has an Asus M2N32-SLI Deluxe motherboard, the CMOS battery is located down towards the bottom of the motherboard, and slightly to the right.

For additional questions, or clarification to what I have stated, please post in a Comment.

I have a laptop and I removed the battery while the computer was stiil on. Now the computer won't turn on.What do I do?

Connect your ac power cord and turn the unit back on. Allow it to fully boot to Windows and reconnect your external battery, then perform an oderly shutdown. Some manufacturers have special software that condition the external batteries to like new condition, you may have to download this and run it on your laptop.

Still odd warning sound when starting the computer

Reset your CMOS...

If you don't have a Jumper to reset the CMOS, pull out your power cord, open the computer, and pull out the motherboard's battery leaving it out for about a day (Don't plug in the computer's power cord during this time period). About 24 hours later plug the computer's power cord back in and try a boot (Don't put the battery back in to your motherboard at this time).

If this problem persists check manuals to see if there is a method to reset the CMOS by moving a jumper. If there is not such a method available you might have to send the motherboard back to the manufacturer requesting the BIOS ROM chip be replaced. Depending on if you're still under warranty or not you might have to pay a small fee.

If at any time the boot is successful, enter the BIOS and save the default settings. Afterward shut down, pull out the power cord, and place your battery back in to the motherboard.

Hopefully you get it fixed.

Power down

I know the original post is over 2 years old but I had the same problem. Here's what happened:

8 months after buying my Toshiba A135 the battery began charging only intermittently. It also would not run without the battery. I put up with it for a month then took it back to Best Buy to get it repaired under warranty. They kept it over 2 weeks then gave it back saying it was the battery, which they replaced. One week later I had the same problem again. Back to Best Buy. The guy at the counter said it was probably the battery, they had encountered a lot of that. I said no, explained it, and gave it over to be fixed. 2 weeks later I got it back. They had reset the BIOS, no hardware replacement. I got it home and it was not fixed. I took it back the next day. They kept it 2 more weeks. They replaced the motherboard. I took it home and...you guessed it the same problem on the day I got it home!!! I took it back with one week left on my warranty. I don't remember what they replaced the last time but I think it was the motherboard again. I got it home (2 weeks later) and THE SAME PROBLEM on the day I got it home. So, the lesson there is that Best Buy computer maintenance SUCKS!!

I called Toshiba to try to get them to fix it for free, and out of warranty. After several frustrating minutes of conversation with an accented person who just kept telling me that my warranty was up, I hung up and called back and got an English speaking person. SHE was very helpful, listened to my problem, agreed to give me a one-time fix ticket. They paid for the postage. When I got my computer back it was mostly fixed.

The problem was the module at the back of the computer where the power cord plugs in. It was defective. They replaced it and it worked fine after that, except that when it goes into sleep mode it will not wake up. I fixed that by turning off all the sleep mode options. BTW, a friend of mine with the same computer is now having the same problem.

Gateway M-6750 Laptop power issue

First try this: Unplug the laptop from the AC adapter (very important). Then take out the laptop battery and place it back into the laptop after a few seconds. Try powering on the computer. If that does not work, then continue reading.

If there is a LED light on the gateway power adapter check that it turns green when the adapter is plugged in. If it does not turn green (assuming there's a light there at all) then your power adapter is bad. There are a couple of different places to go from there. If the computer is less than a year old take it to geek squad at any best buy to have them send it into service under manufacturer's warranty. If it is not less than a year old try buying a universal adapter from Best Buy to see if that works (which you can return without penalty if you wish). If that does not work then your motherboard is bad. The cost of repair would probably come close to the cost of a new laptop.
