If the thermostat is stuck in the open position the engine will run too cold. The sensor tells the computer "cold engine" and therefore keeps the fuel mixture extra rich. Just like old car with the choke pulled out, the fuel rich mix causes the spark plugs to foul with carbon and of course run and idle poorly.

1994. Jaguar xj 6 is back firing what should I do

Don't drive is it a back fire or a misfire. Is the car low on power is the engine running rough have you a warning light on, is there oil in the water. A backfire with rough running might be a blown head gasket check the compressions. And let us know the outcome.

1999 jeepn wrangler 4 cyl 5 speed rough idle

rough idle is from faulty injectors or maf/vaf sensors or vacuum leaks
run the fault codes to determine the fault area

1995 jeep gr cherokee laredo jumps when first star in morning and runs rough when ac or heat on

my guess, car unseen.
car has an A/T trans, and all A/T jump from park to drive
selection is made on a cold engine, due to the very fast idle speed.
what was the park and cold idle speed. and out door temps.
the lower out door temps, make idle speed , cold engine, even higher
but when the engine reaches 180F or more and holds, the RPM
is about 800 RPM (the FSM tells the exact amount and does vary for the unstated engine option) so at 800 the tranny don;t lurch, did it on a hot engine. so if idle speeds are wrong say so and say it with engine temps. or its all meaningless.
next :
runs rough, the engine (even parked?) is called misfire.
misfire on a good engine (full compression)
is:
1: bad spark (or never had a tune up ever) every 60k miles.
2: bad fueling. too rich, too lean (low idle) bad injectors (stuck or clogged, or wrong fuel pump pressure or bad Fuel pressure regulator)
3: bad fuel.

there is a test for each possible failure. all very simple test.
it takes $80 in gauge tools to find engine problems.

Rough idle random cylinder misfire

misfires are more from problem injectors, low fuel pressure or injector wiring than from plugs
have a fuel pressure test done to check for problem pressure regulator , problem fuel pump , blocked m/dirty filter
one other area of concern is the EVAP system where the purge valve doesn't vent the tank properly and causes low fuel flow rates

I have a 92 yj 2.5l 5 speed. it has only after warming up a misfire/rough idle. its fine when its cold and once it warms up and idle comes down it misfires/idles really rough. may be lacking power also. i...

check that the EGR valve is not sticking or has a vacuum leak. This valve will not operate until the engine is warm.

check also the engine coolant temp sensor (ECT). This sensor tells the engine computer that the engine has warmed up, so if it is faulty, it could be sending wrong information to the computer. If the sensor is disconnected, wires to it broken, or faulty in full cold mode, it will tell the computer that the engine is very cold, like -40F. The computer will schedule fuel for cold conditions. This is usually way too much fuel for a warm engine and it will rich misfire, idle rough, and be difficult to start warm.

The ECT has two wires going to it and is dedicated to sending information to the engine computer. It has nothing to do with your dash gauge that shows coolant temp. That sender has only one wire and is dedicated to the coolant temp gauge.

What do the engine codes 12, 51, and 17 mean on a 1995 Jeep Cherokee 4 cylinder , 2 whd, 5 speed. It has a rough idle, really low fuel mileage, and not much power. Just recently started this problem.... I...

Code 12; Means the PCM sensed the battery was disconnected and after 50 key cycles, this code will disappear. Code 17; Means the engine is cold too long after start up. Engine coolant temp remains below normal operating range during vehicle travel. The thermostat is stuck open; replace the thermostat. Code 51; The O2 sensor stays below center voltage outout. And indicates a rich fuel condition. This is caused by the stuck open thermostat.
