You should first update your version of tom-tom home. (download and save DON'T run it from the web as this has some minor glitches on occasion)
If you are looking to buy new maps then TTH will help you with that.
You didn't say if it was TTH that was not finding maps or your GPS itself when you power it up. This is important information that is needed to help you further.
If you have an SD card then remove that before you power up to see if your tom-tom works OK or not.
After a certain period of time updates can only be bought and not just downloaded

What you need to do is to reset your unit. To reset your device, First check that the battery is properly charged. Allow the tom tom charge for about 2 hours before trying to turn it on again. Make sure the charging light on your device is on.
Reset your device by using a straightened paper clip or something similar to push the reset button for about 15 seconds.
Then you turn on your device by pressing and holding the power button for about 15 seconds. The picture of where the reset button is on your device is shown below.

TomTom is aware of a problem with this unit that is normally caused by the car charger and unit being turned on and in use when the engine is started ( causing undue interference in the supply, tomtom chargers are not, im afraid, known to posess the best regulator circuits on the market) This can lead to symptoms as in your case, or as bad as a totally dead unit ( the front light will illuminate when the on/sby button is pressed and it will only go off when the unit is reset)In all the cases ive seen tomtom has replaced the unit. Im afraid you will have to contact tomtom by phone and they will normally arrange FOC collection by a courier.
