Restoring the computer back to factory settings would be the smartest thing to do. but its not a solution. i would recommend that try to reinstall the os and create a parition and save all your information on the other partition. Not on C but anywhere on D, E etc. or you can use an external hdd for this purpose which will back up your information automatically. so you wont think twice restoring it back to factory settings. if you are using windows vista. i suggest turn off automatic updates. because updates causes lot of issues than they resolve.
so as of now you may restore it back to factory settings and turn off the updates. this will certainely work out. SONY's laptop si a good laptop and it hardly cause any hardware problem. so its just vista.
The fool proof option is
Install XP and say good bye to all crashes. ;)

I think you antiwirus has damaged the system files and you should just re instal the opperating system
