Check that unit is receiving 80% rated voltage
Humming sound means start capacitor has gone bad.

Your disposal is stuck. Sounds like something either fell in it, or perhaps a bone got inadvertantly tossed in. Do you own an allen wrench set? The garbage disposal did originally come with one, but it usually gets lost. The one that came with it will look like two hockey stick stuck together. In any event, you need one for the fix. There is a hole on the bottom of the disposal, directly in the center. Find the correct size allen wrench and place in this hole. Twist clockwise and counter clockwise until it is free. Once this is done, you most likely will need to hit the reset button on the bottom. Good luck!

If cutter plate turns freely and motor hums, then motor winding has gone bad.
Each time you turn it on, the motor is overheating and will stop humming.

Garbage dispoal not working. The blades spin freely inside, the reset button has been reset, when you switch it on the moter makes a faint humming sound, and the allen wrench will not rotate either way.

You need a new disposal.
Free-rotating blades show there is no obstruction.
Humming says you have power.
Frozen allen wrench says bearings are rusted.
Motor is now overheating each timer electricity is turned on, and motor will overheat and stop humming.
At least the drain is clean and water is not flooding under the sink, which means you can continue using sink until disposal is replaced.

Insinkerator hums when turned on, but does not start. Blades turn freely when hex key is used on the bottom

Look for the reset button under the bottom. This may get you going again. If not, you may need to replace the unit. Sorry.

If the blades move freely with the wrench and stick and motor hums then it sounds like it is time to replace the unit. Have you tried the reset switch? If it is humming than it is probably not tripped but worth a try. Hope this helps.

Insinkerator has power but does not grind garbage. have hit reset button and turned allen screw at bottom. now i dont get a hum from the motor.

Is it hardwired or does it plug into an outlet? If it plugs in, check the outlet for power. Is a circuit breaker tripped? How do you know it has power if it doesn't even hum?

The blades on my Badger 1 insinkerator don't move. The motor hums when turned on. The reset button stays out when pushed.

You will need to free the blades by inserting the food disposal hex key or a 1/4 Allen Wrench into the very bottom of the disposal in the center. After inserting the wrench you need to turn it all the way in both directions to free what has the blades held up. It may be hard to turn but afterwards pull the debris out from inside the disposal. Hit the reset button and it will work. Do not keep turning it on until you free the blade and then reset.
