Added dvd drive not recodnized

I recently got a new Asus DVD drive (CB-5126A) to add to my desktop, I already have another Asus DVD drive installed but the new one doesn't seem to be recognized. Each drive has power and can open and shut but only the original drive is working. I found that when I unplug the original dvd drive and only have the new drive plugged in it works just fine... but i can't get BOTH of them to work... please help!

See if the bios sees it first of all. If it does, then go to Windows management, click on disk management, select the disk, and give it a disk letter. Windows can't see it if it doesn't have a letter assigned to it.

SOURCE: Asus DRW-241st stopped recognizing any

Good day sir, Try to clean it with a CD lens cleaner if problem persist.I recommend replacing your optical disk drive or use it as a slave for reading CD's so that your new ODD will last long. in my opinion most DVDRAM, player etc. can read most formats except Bluray disc. using the device from reading CD,VCD and DVD lessen's the device life span.
sometimes if we rarely use the ODD its already not working.

Installed asus combo CB-5126A but my computer won't recognise it. If a CD is placed in it won;t work on the computer I can just hear the cd whirring.

make sure that the dvd burner is getting enough power test all leads that are attached to the dvd burner including electical extensions and make sure they have a secure connection or just replace them there might be bad/faulty or
your drivers may have been corrupted or you might have a virus run your antivrus program
you might have to physically unplug the leads for this cd/dvd burner then plug them back in or
you might have to uninstall then reinstall your DVD/CD or uninstall the driver then reinstall for this device
control panel admistrive tools, computer management, device manager scroll down cd dvd rom drives right click you can you can update driver, roll back driver,or
select properties general troubleshoot, select driver click to reinstall drivers click update driver or uninstall then reinstall

if this does not fix the problem it might be a registry problem

Close all open programs

Click on Start, Run, and type regedit and press Enter
Click on the plus signs (+) next to the following folders

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

SYSTEM

CurrentControlSet

Control

Class

{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

This folder is the DVD/CD-ROM Drive Class Description in the registry. Look for any of the following names in the right hand column.

Upper Filters

Lower Filters

Upper Filters.bak

Lower Filters.bak

If any of the above keys shown in step 4 are listed, right-click on them and choose Delete

After deleting the keys, close the registry editor
Reboot your computer

Open My Computer and check to see if your CD or DVD drives have returned. You may also want to open Device Manager and verify that the yellow exclamation and error code on the CD or DVD drive is gone.

hope this helps

My PC somehow deleted it's own cd/dvd driver. Possibly from a virus that has been eradicated already. Any idea where I can download one from that will work with the dimension 2200?

Hello,
You should first run the add new hardware wizzard, looking specifically for CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drives. If the drive is not defective Windows will most certainly detect it and install the appropriate drivers.

To run Add new hardware wizzard, Go to Control Panel, On the left (WIN XP) choose classic view. Find the Add New Hardware icon and click on it. Allow the wizzard to install driver automatically, allow it to go tho the Internet if necessary.

Hope it helps.

How to install a ASUS CB-5216A 52x CD-RW Burner DVD-ROM

Here is a site that has a good manual for installing the Dvd Burner. It is very stright forward once you open up the case. Just make sure that you unplug the computers power cable, open up the case. Notice how the cables in the back of the cd rom are connected. Take the CD rom out and slide the new one in. The site listed below also has pictures to help you out.
