Make sure the Hdd is well connected , and hope its not an HDD failure. Might also want to check see if you didn't disconnect any other wires by changing the battery.

RTM yet, at lenovo.com?
well why not put in a NEW CMOS coin cell first
so BIOS stops telling you lies. Chaos.

CMOS dies at 7 years
then CMOS configs are corrupted in NVRAM
then it lies to you, all PCs do this with bad $1 battery dead.
all do.
2005 PC right not one ran for 13 year, none.

128 bits all wrong and telling lies, and no you
using a volt meter on coin and below 2.9vdc is the cliff of deathh

What is the problem when uyou switch on the IBM

You probably need to replace the BIOS battery. This battery is small and on the inside of the laptop connected to the motherboard. It stores the BIOS settings, date and time. If this battery becomes worn out then it will cause your issue. First try and press F1. Navigate to the last tab and select to restore defaults, then save and exit. If the computer boots up fine but the next time you use it the same message appears then you need a new BIOS battery. Alternatively your HDD may be damaged if it cannot find a boot device. Check your HDD is recognised on the boot menu by pressing F12, select it and press enter and your OS should boot. Hope this helps,

ThinkPad 600 System Board error

Have you tried using the reset jumper on the motherboard? I had a PC a few months ago that I had to replace the battery in. I eventually had to use the clear CMOS jumper and the reset BIOS jumper to get the computer to load to BIOS normally. Remember, if you don't have to correct the date and time, then the BIOS has not been reset. Sometimes it is a good idea to leave the PC off and unplugged for about 10-15 minutes to let the capacitors drain down. By doing this after reseting the PC, it gives you a clean cold boot (meaning there is nothing stored and nothing has had power before a reboot).

IBM Thinkpad will not hold date & time.

Replace the backup battery and run BIOS Setup Utility to reset the time and date. This will resolve the issue.

Starting ibm 600e

Hi there.
Errors 161, 192, 163.
All three of these errors are connected to the back up battery.
To resolve this problem:
1. open memory flap on base of laptop (small philips screwdriver required)
2. find the small connector with 1 black & 1 red wire coming from it.
3. disconnect above connector and gently pull the Red&black wires. The backup battery should just pull out from under the casing.
4. get replacement battery. Either
a. call IBM spares (07900 247 490 in UK) and ask for FRU:
02K6502. UK price is about £8 + £15 delivery + VAT.
b. if comfortable with soldering iron: Carefully open the packaging on the backup battery using a sharp knife.
Remove the solder tags from the battery (these are spot welded so need to be cut/broken off). Buy a new CR2025 battery from any computer shop, jeweler, or camera shop.
Using electrical tape, insulate all round edge of battery
Solder the leads onto the new battery - note polarity. Red wire to +, black wire to -.
Using more insulating tape, wrap battery so that all exposed metal is covered.
5. put new battery into laptop (reverse steps 1-3)
6. start up computer, error 192 has gone, but still shows 161, 163. Select OK.
7. reset date & time, and OK
8. when screen shows 'O / I' restart laptop using on/off switch at side.

Good luck and thanks for using FixYa!!

Bios lock, ERROR CODE 0271

Hi,
Error code 0271 - Date and time error. Neither the date nor the time is set in the computer.
Run BIOS Setup Utility to reset the time and date
It sounds as though your computer has the wrong time in the CMOS. The CMOS (Complementary Metal-Oxide Semiconductors) is the chip that holds the basic startup information for the BIOS, system and its peripherals while the system is turned on and off.

If you can get into the BIOS check the date and time settings and make sure they are correct.

It may also be a case of the CMOS battery going out. When this happens your computer will tend to not keep the correct time. They are cheap and relatively easy to replace. Before buying a new batter your can try to take it out and let it sit for about 10 minutes or so to reset the CMOS and then go put the battery back in and go into the BIOS and reset the clock.

Hopefully taking the batter out or replacing it will get past your lock icon asking for the password. Just search for CMOS or BIOS default password for your brand of laptop.

IRe: IBM 600E

Hi, sorry I was out last night.
Errors 00161/00163/00173 mean you need to replace the CMOS/BIOS battery and update the time, date etc, like you did.. and Error 00301 means a keyboard error. Just press CtrlAltDel past this.. or try using an external PS-2 keyboard..

So, when you startup and then get to the errors, just press CtrlAltDel to restart, then tap F1 to enter the Advanced Settings and try to load Windows in Safe Mode, and let it do a Scan Disk.

It's possible that the machine won't be able to load any hardware drivers for the machine because the CMOS information might have been corrupted due to the flat battery, but try and boot into Safe Mode anyway and see how you get on.

This is a really old machine but still has driver and troubleshooting support at the Lenovo website, and it might be fun and interesting to resurrect..

On pages 109 and 115of the attached pdf file (actual pages 103 and 109), the Li-Ion batterypack part number should read 12P4064 replaces 02K7018.

This is the Setup Guide for the thinkpad 600.

Of course, it may very well load Windows fine after a new battery and a scandisk and you'll find it has Windows 2000 on it, so maybe I'm jumping the gun with the Win98 stuff there, but let me kow how you get on..

Oh by the way, if we are going to be using a different Solution thread this time, can you go back to the other page and rate it as Fixya! so that they can take it off the system? It saves the unrated pages filling up the servers..

I forgot my bios password

Laptops often do not have a dedicated CMOS battery, but use a hardwired device which you have to unsolder and solder back.
You don't want to do that without some decent experience.
There are two basic kinds of passwords that will be prompted for by the IBM BIOS, computer and HDD. (You can tell the difference by the icon prompt).
If this is a HDD password, there are no options for recovery in the US. Federal laws prohibit possession of the software to access the secure portion of the disk. The computer passwords are also not able to be cleared locally.
The unit can be sent to an IBM's maintenance and support center and they will either clear the PW or in some cases replace the planar. If you just purchased the laptop, contact the previous owner for the passwords. If not, then sending it in for maintenance is your best bet.
