Have 11 year old gas furnace & this winter, began having problem with furnace heat not going up to thermostat setting. the colder it is outside, the less the furnace will go up to temp setting. Replaced thermostat and still happens. if set at 70'-will go to 70' if temp outside is in the 40's. if outside is in 20's, will only kick in if inhouse temp goes below 65'. If around 15' outside, will only kick on if thermostat inhouse temp drops below 62'-all with thermostat SET at 70'. Doesn't matter if on 'schedule' or 'temporary' setting or if you increased temp to 75'. If around 15' outside, sticks at 62' and cannot get indoor temp above that. What could be the problem?? Never knew of a thermostat readjust to the outside temp.

However - the problem is probably not with your thermostat but with your furnace. It is most likely a dirty flame sensor - a maintenance issue. If you have not had your furnace serviced recently (more than 1 year) that is where you should start. Modern furnaces require regular maintenance.
