Says 16g (but only 11.5g available

Hi Steve,

Here are the specs for this machine:

http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=c03789872

You should be able to install & use 16GB (max) in that machine provided you have the memory type required and you have a 64 bit OS installed on it. HP also notes that the OS may further reduce the amount of memory on the machine. I would start by disabling the quick boot feature in most BIOS screens so that the memory can be checked and :"counted". If it goes up to 16GB, the memory is good and the OS is limiting to ~12GB. If not - there a bad chip / stick somewhere.

You should begin swapping memory sticks one at a time to determine which stick is problematic and return it for replacement.

Not reading in computer and camera

It's probably a fake one. I had the same problem; I bought a 16GB one for few bucks from an online store, but it was fake so I faced the same problem.
Read this guide to determine if your memory stick is fake or not: http://reviews.ebay.co.uk/FAKE-Sony-Memory-Stick-Pro-Duo-MagicGate-Cards-Exposed_W0QQugidZ10000000001535763

If it's not fake, then there might be a problem with your memory stick. Try replacing it with a new one if possible.

Hope this helped.

16GB USB Memory Stick not readable by Macbook

It's possible it was just subjected to a static shock and got scrambled. As long as the data previously on it was not important to you, you can re-initialize the unit (provided it has not been physically damaged).
In Applications/Utilities, launch Disk Utility. Plug in the USB stick. Choose the stick by name in the left side panel, and click the Partition tab. Choose 1 partition. In Options, choose GUID Partition Table. Click Apply. This should reinitialize your stick.

I formatted a 16GB sony produo mem stick on my laptop using Win XP II. Now my computer or camera or PSP can't detect the card

Put the card back in the computer and format it using FAT (not NTFS) format. In the format menu, you'll see the file system pull down option, choose FAT and format again.

16GB flash drive as virtual memory?

If you mean an USB pendrive/stick, these are much slower than hard drives.
There are so-called SSD - Solid State Disks, which have a special construction (many Flash banks running in parallel) enabling them to offer transfer speeds comparable to a hard disk. These come as ATA or SATA drives that you connect just as you would a traditional hard disk.

Sony CX-12 Camcorder gives message when memory stick inserted

Hi!
This is a feature and not a defect of the CX-12 that reminds the user that the memory stick inserted might not be able to record the data from the camera effectively. HD video requires a memory stick with a relatively fast data read/write speed, and the CX-12 recommends not using any other stick that is not Mark 2.
Fortunately, though, as you have found out, it does not affect the camera's ability to record in non-Mark 2 sticks.
Hope this helps!
