Nikon 35-70mm F2.8D Lens not focusing at infinity

Hi, I bought this lens second hand recently and only really tried it at close quarters for portraits and it worked brilliantly at all focal lengths. However this weekend I decided to try some landscape/street photography with the lens but it would not auto focus further than 10-12 feet away when I tried all ranges from 35mm - 50mm. Even setting it to infinity and then switching to auto focus still didn't help and the lens just would not focus but when I set it from 50mm-70mm it auto focused without any problem.

SOURCE: Lens will not auto focus any more.

Hi there!

I experienced the exact same problem with my 100-300mm lens and I was never able to get it to work correctly again. In fact, attempting to use it further seemed to exacerbate the problem.

The further you zoom, the wider the aperture opens allowing more light for the camera to focus properly. If the aperture mechanism is damaged, the auto-focus process may not work as it should; which would explain why the auto-focus feature works only when at 18mm.

Regardless, I strongly recommend you discontinue use of the lens until a professional technician can examine the lens and figure out what's going on. I'm sure you can contact the manufacturer to open a support case or you can find a camera store that offers repair services.

I hope this helps!

I had the exact same problem, took it to a repair shop, and they said the motor had to be replaced completely for $140! The lens is only 18 months old and was not used THAT much! Argh.

SOURCE: My 55-200 automatic lens will not auto focus on

From the sounds of things it sounds like a part is worn in the lense, my advise is to contact Nikon and send away to be repaired, they have a great service department. I have used them and they are quite inexpensive to.

I have been given a vivitar 70-210 series 1 lens 1:3.5 with a Canon AE1 would the lens work with a DSLR Nikon D3100 - would I need to buy an adaptor ?

No, and no.

The lens will not work on a Nikon camera.

Nikon cameras are deeper than Canon cameras. Even if a Canon lens fit onto a Nikon body, it would not focus at infinity. In order to enable a Canon lens to focus at infinity on a Nikon body, a lens adapter would have to have a negative thickness.

Which size of adapter to use to fit it to Nikon D300?

Nikon bodies are thicker than Olympus bodies, thus while Nikon lenses can be made to focus to infinity when mounted onto an Olympus body, an Olympus lens will not focus to infinity were it mounted onto a Nikon body. Thus, no one makes an adapter to fit an Olympus lens onto a Nikon body.

Trouble focusing

Not too many things that can do this are simple, but here are a few you can check. First, make sure you aren't too close for the lens to focus. For the 18-55, that's only about 5" from the front of the lens, so I doubt this is the problem.

Second, make sure that you are focusing on something that has contrast, not just the wall in your dining room.

If it still won't focus, then there's something wrong that will require a service tech to fix, so it's time to take it to the Nikon dealer.

Lens will not open up all the way

Is the maximum available aperture dependent on the focus distance? Many macro/micro lenses "dim" slightly as you focus in close.

See if you get 2.8 focused at infinity.
