You may have some malfunctioning hardware. When the computer boots up and you see the compaq screen, you should be able to perform hardware diagnostics by pressing one of the F keys. Look in the bottom right hand corner. My guess is going to be malfunctioning hard drive, especially since the computer is a bit "older" and age is rough on laptop hard drives.
I believe the key for diags is F9
Never ran into this problem myself but a friend of mine has. He said what fixed his what holding Fn + Num Lock and it remedied his problem. Unless your key is stuck/broken you can also try a can of air and try to blow it out and or pull the key and make sure its not stuck down. But deff try the holding Fn + Num Lock method first.
Try unplugging from the a/c adaptor, and removing the battery for a couple of minutes. Replace the battery and turn the computer on. It should be fixed now.
when you mean "stuck" in widescreen mode, is it due to a boarder or is it something else. Using the remote control you can make the necessary changes such as DPI, Borders, etc...
Sounds like it is a widescreen TV stuck in standard view mode.
Should have a menu option called widescreen or movie format.
Do you see the whole picture squeezed down or is it actually cutting off the sides of it?
