Remove ALL media, DVD,CD, USB, etc. Unplug, remove battery, plug in, reboot. If that fails, reseat the Memory Mods. Replace the CMOS battery, remove HDD and test.

SOURCE: Black Screen with Blinking dash on upper left corner

Are the xp disks specific for that computer. The reason I ask is because when you changed the hardrive none of the components on your computer know what to do because you won't have any drivers.

Does your hard drive lights come on? Do you think the computer is trying to access your disk drive

SOURCE: boot up problem

HI,

There might be a problem with your cmos/bios setting. Try to set to defaults first.

the bios/cmos menu can be entered by pressing del or F2 or F10 keys during power on (before windows logo appears) depending what type of notebook.

find the boot devive or boot sequence,
select CDROM as the first boot ( or first line)
Save and reboot

good luck

SOURCE: New HDD inserted into Pavilion ZD7000 - will not boot from XP CD

Try your old HDD in it and see if that works. If it does work then nothing is damaged except your DVD drive/Controller. Try putting the new HDD in another computer, installing windows then putting it back in the HP. If all else fails then flash the bios with an updated image and see if that rectifies the problem.

SOURCE: How do I boot from an external CD? The BIOS offers

The HP Mini are kind of odd, the external CD/DVD or usb drive will only show in BIOS after you plug it in, power it on and then reboot. Then go into BIOS and it should list it in boot priority list. Move it to the top and reboot and it will boot from CD. Also you can press F9 instead and it will let you select the boot device.

When I push the power button, the main dell start up screen comes on followed by a black screen with a blinking cursor in the upper left corner. It uses Windows 7

Remove any CD's or USB drives 1st.

Sound like its trying to load and can't find hard drive, CD, or USB device. You need to go into BIOS by pressing an F key during boot. Look on the screen for correct Function key to press during boot. Make internal hard drive first. Save and restart. Reseat hard drive if it does not show up in BIOS.

It wont boot, goes to black screen with whit blinking dash

Yes, this sounds like the traditional black screen issue, but it's different! This machine is a Dell Dimension 3000 with XP. System won't boot. After Blue Dell BIOS splash screen with F2 & F12 options, it just goes black. There will ultimately be a white cursor in the upper left hand corner. I can edit BIOS with F2, I can get in to the boot menu with F12, but I can't do anything after that. I can even get in to the Safe Mode menu (F8), but it never boots.

Check you do not have a disc in the CD drive or a USB drive connected.

Check the BIOS has the boot order correct, select the hard drive as the first drive to boot from.

If that does not fix it you will need the OS CD and change the boot options to boot from CD first, and try to recover the data.

OK download that service manual, follow the troubleshooting procedures and you will sort your problem out in now time, i have a hunch, that your HDD, is faulty... and may need replacement. Anyway Download and use that manual, it's a generic one.. but will still work for you.

Was installing hp starter disk 6500 into dell4550 dell was terned off my mistake and now wont re-boot just blank screen with small light flashing were fast upper left corner of screen

Enter the system bios and set the boot order to boot from CD ROM. If this order is correct and you are still experiencing the same issue. Re-enter the bios and set it to default setup. However, enter the boot order and ensure the CD-ROM is the first boot device and Hard Drive is the second.

You could take the CMOS battery out of the motherboard, unplug the power cord and hold the power button in for about 20-30 seconds. Plug it back in and turn it on without the battery in it and it should come up with the bios. Turn the machine back off and reinstall the battery. When you turn it back on you should be able to press F2 for setup or F12 for the boot menu.

Black screen and in the upper left corner there is a cursor theat is blinking ... and teat is all

It sounds like a problem loading the operating system. Try booting from an installation CD to see if anything comes up... if it loads from the CD, there could be a problem with your hard drive.
When it turns on, try entering the BIOS by pressing the correct key (usually DEL, F10, F12, or F2) Make sure that the boot device is set to your hard drive. If you do this and it loads with an error saying 'insert boot media' or 'boot device failed' you'll have to either try fixing your boot sector (which can get tricky, but I'll walk you through it if you really want to attempt it) or a much easier fix, reinstall the operating system.
