my problem is with an RCA RS2620 am-fm radio, dual tape deck and a 5 place cd player.
I have low volume but it is adjustable, when I recieved the machine for repair it had no sound but after changing Q401,D402 and C411 then I started receiving the low volume I never checked trying it with an earplug but now when I try the ear plug it is the same as what is coming out of the speaker for volume.
also I don't hear any noise when I switch the radio mode to AM
the cd player works but has the same volume as the FM radio.
I went to electronics school in 1954 but never persued it as an occupation but did run a tv shop for years along with being a carpenter.
I don't have a scope anymore to trace the signal but I believe my problem is on the amp board and again I am guessing but think it is a voltage problem but with out something to go by I have no idea what the voltages would be.
also on IC401 where is pin 24 located i know the dot on the IC is number 1 but with out a data sheet for that IC I have no idea where pin 24 is so I can check that voltage if you guys have the service manual or a schematic I sure would like a copy of it and would be willing to exchange some schematics you need for some I have.
please let me know what to do.

Sorry **** - but the only way you can get values from a board is either TESTING them - or reading them off a Repair Manual or good board.

For us to spend $15-$25 on a repair manual for you defeats the purpose of this troubleshooting question.

We are in a crapshoot to earn less than half of the fee you are paying.

My suggestion is to purchase the Service Manual - and come back to repost any technical questions you have with the reference material in hand.

Good Luck with your -needle in a haystack- find (expert with a working board that is disassembled to read references off of just for you)

Please direct your refund request to FixYa - as experts do not have the ability to satisfy this request.

Did you check if the AM/FM switch if working fine ?
May be only FM mode works and AM mode is locked.
You may try replacing it and see.

Either the rheostat for volume has failed or the pre-amp has a problem, it could also be the playback head, but all these things are labor and time consuming and these types of electronic devices are cheap and in many cases no spare's are even available if they are not a generic part, that is not a 5th grade answer but a truthful statement.

without a factory service manual and wiring diagrams u will be just guessing, correct, and educated guess but a guess, that is really what we are doing, we have no specific manuals, we work from home and are not employed by Fixya, just trying to point u in the right direction, just trying to help, the is nothing, when i work I make $40+ (electronics tech) and hour, so this is for fun mostly.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, I am not familiar with an RCA RS2620, and therefore would appreciate a copy of the schematic diagram. With your indulgence pls email attach them to <[email protected]>.

Let's try the basics, and I think you are on the right track. Common to any and all functions would be the amplifier. Even if the AM is faulty, FM & CD should still work. Your post indicates that the low volume is common to all. This being so, then probable faults would be:

  • pre-amp/driver (least likely);
  • finals/output (likely); or
  • low DC supply voltage (most likely).

But then again without the schematics could not be more specific. Would look forward to receiving the schematics then.

Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.

Hi,
If the unit appears to function properly, moves tape etc, but no sound, plug in a headset and see if you have sound. If you do the power amplifier has a problem. It could be that it is not getting power, has shorted outputs, or no signals to the amp. These units tend to have bad solder joints and probably half the time resoldering all the joints in the suspect circuit solves the problem. If that doesn't work you'll need an O scope to trace the signal through the system, provided you are sure the amplifier is getting the proper power. Good Luck.

Hope This Helps!!!  Please Don't Forget to Rate my Response!!! Thanks!!!

As you will have to check the parts with a continuity on the amp board because continuity will give the exact fault in the part as if the light in the continuity comes on that means that component is proper other wise its faulty if no light comes up.and with the meter you will have to check the value of each part which seems to be faulty.that will clear mostly all the faulty parts in the board and that has to be replaced.also check out if any ic seems to be loose on the board then this can create the sound problem so first to start just dry solder whole board and let it remain for some time that will make all the minor components on the board firm and tight then just check out if sound is coming.aLso if the connecting cables on the board have cut in them then the sound can be disturbed or low. thanks.

That is probably a defective ceramic filter in the if stage, or a setting problem.

  • Ginko
    Ginko Feb 27, 2009

If the Radio works fine in FM, but there is no audio at all, not even static in am, it is likely a fault concerning the if stage.
The if stages are the part of the circuit that filter the signal to eliminate the bad frequencies.
They use ceramic filters and that is the first part to test.

Alternatively it can be a problem with the AM tuner circuit, but in that case you should have static, and I also understood you have already done some job in there.

Radio won't turn up. Very low volume out of speakers

It sounds like you are having trouble with the volume on your radio. This could be caused by a few different things. To troubleshoot, first ensure that the volume knob on the radio is turned up to its max. If the volume is already turned up, then you should check the speaker wires to make sure they are connected properly and not loose or frayed. If the wires are secure, then you should check the volume control on your amplifier to make sure it is not set to a low volume level. If the amplifier volume is already set to a high level, then the problem may be with the radio itself and you may need to contact a professional for extra help.

Max volume to low

Check the settings of the monitor for audio volume. Also check the individual volume control setting for the applications and system sounds. Or call ViewSonic technical support for assistance.

Low volume controll

In recent years public service and all land mobile has moved to narrow band FM from the old 12.5khz or 5khz bandwidth FM to new 2.5 and 1.25 khz format.
The older scanners will play these transmissions with much lower volume and there is nothing that can be done to the scanner to solve this.
You can buy an amplified speaker and use that to further boost the audio or just replace the scanner with a new scanner built by Uniden or GRE (General Research Electronics) who make almost every scanner on the market. Both are good units.

Sound output is low nowadays even at full volume whereas before it was ok. I didn't change anything with my computer nor did I change my speakers.

Two possible causes.1) Vol Settings changed in windows2) Bad hardware
1) Check your system's sound settings:

For Xp
  • Goto Control Panel
  • Double Click Sound and Audio devices / Sound, Speech, and Audio Devices
  • In device Volume Click Advance
  • Master Volume Control Window will open
  • Increase all the volumes to max, also make sure that Mute us UNCHECKED.

OR
  • From the bottom right corner of your screen in system tray, double click a small speaker icon and open Master Volume Control.

For Vista and Windows 7
  • From system tray (its at bottom right corner of your screen) double click on small speaker icon, it will open Volume mixer
  • Increase the volume to max.

2) If this does not work, then test your speakers by connecting it to some other system and vice versa.
If you get desired sound volume when you connect some other speakers to your system, then you have to change your speakers. And if your speakers are working fine on other system then you may have to purchase a new sound card.

My xm plays extremely loud thru my car stereo.no matter what i set the volume at.it is either off when volume is set to zero or loud at any other setting.changing the output level on the xm receiver does...

Are you playing it directly thru your FM antenna connection, or using the RCA jacks? You have to set the FM modulator level. It is also possible that you have a new FM radio with a type of ALC that will raise the lever regardless, but your regular car radio volume control should work. do not wire this directly to a power amp, as you won't have the control that you need. Good luck, let me know more.

The sound on the device is too low!

Often it is to do with the kind of sound that is being outputted by the DVD player. If the sound for example is set to produce dolby 5.1 and you don't have a suitable decoder it will be very low.
Check the sound settings of both your DVD player and sound system.

- the volume control is defected will not respond ( electronic volume control; need logic low/high to activate the audio )
- the front control PCB is broken ( can be fixed if there is a small cracked )
If no audio at all then most likely audio output IC defected

Rca rs 2620 power but no audio

I had the sane problem: No audio out from any source. Although I was unable to find a schematic or service manual, I did find the defective part was labeled on the circuit board as Q401 and replaced it with RadioShack part number 276-2009 (MPS2222A NPN Transistor TO-92 case NPN silicon). This is not an exact match, but is available at most RadioShack locations for under $1 and has fixed the problem.
