My mistake. There is a battery under the CD drive. You must remove the drive completely and then remove th board underneath it. The battery you need is a CR2032. Be very careful when opening up the unit as there are a number of cables that can be damaged.

Unit starts/stops-starts/stops after replacing 3v battery?

When you say starts/stops (etc) are you saying it just keeps trying to reboot? Or are you getting a message such as boot disk not found press any key to restart? Replacing the 3V battery will cause the CMOS to reset to factory defaults. You may need to go into the CMOS and make setting changes to point to the proper disk drive for booting. You may even have to change the type of disc drive since there is now the old MBR as well as the newer GPT format. Also, there is the possibility that if you are upgrading you may need to use the legacy CMOS instead of the UEFI that many newer mainboards come defaulted to. Any error in the CMOS settings can cause a boot failure.

Advent 5431 date keeps changing back to 2008

IS your TimeZone is Correct?
Right click on your clock, choose Adjust Date/Time.
Click Time Zone Tab. Make sure your Time zone is correctly set.

Boot into the BIOS (setup) screens and check the date and time there. If the date is off by years then that verifies you need a new CMOS battery. Do not confuse the CMOS battery with the large external battery you run the computer with.

Cmos setting not saved

Look at the CMOS reset jumper, located near the battery:
86f0a83.gif
For normal operation there should be a cap shorting pins 1 and 2.
Set the jumper correctly, make sure it really shorts these two pins (once I've seen a jumper cap that didn't have the metal connector inside, only plastic), replace the battery and it should keep the CMOS settings.

How do I replace a dead cmos on acer 4520LCi travelmate laptop? The laptop no longer keeps track of system time when shut off completely. Can you tell me the exact location of the cmos so I can be able to...

Hi,

what you replace is not the CMOS, but the CMOS battery.

On an ACER from those years the CMOS battery looks like a coin, or a coin wrapped in plastic and connected to the motherboard.

On most models from same series the battery is located on the lower side of the motherboard, like on picture below:

On some model the battery may be located underneath the keyboard.

Here disassembly instructions for a similar model.
