When I turn on my MP3 player, the screen changes from black to blue, but nothing else shows up. I'm assuming that I need to charge the battery, and I've connected the MP3 player to my computer, but since the screen isn't showing anything, I can't tell if it's actually charging. Is there anything else I can try?

Some MP3 players charge when you connect it to your pc/laptops USB port. What kind of MP3 player is it?

Windows Media Player 11 has support for some MP3 players. It is known to AUTOMATICALLY UPDATE YOUR FIRMWARE . . . which CAN be a bad thing. The reason that it does this, is because it can do ID3 tags and folder structure and all that jazz to some mp3 players.
No guarantee, but this is a KNOWN issue with Windows Media Player.
You would have to reinstall the firmware on your device . . . then next time you use Windows Media Player with your MP3 player plugged in, just make sure that the SYNC options are unchecked in the preferences.
