C Cleaner from Piriform recommended by Gopinath is the best way to clean up a Vista machine. You can also download a defragmenter from Piriform that is much faster than Windows' defrag program.

How much RAM (memory ) do you have in
your PC,Laptop.The more the better,but make sure motherboard
can take it.It should be in the Bios,some can only carry 2GB.

Hard disk maintenance should be carried once a month to make your computer run efficiently. This removes redundant and temporary files, recovers disk space and speed up hard disk access. Disk Cleanup should be done first - Click My Computer - then right click on the C drive then click Properties, then click Disk Cleanup - let it examine the C drive then it will calculate the amount of disk space it will recover, tick all the boxes to recover the maximum disk space and then Click OK and then Yes to perform these actions. If you have a D drive then repeat these steps on this drive too. Next the C drive needs to be Defrag. This process converts fragmented files into continuous files and this speeds up disk access and makes the hard disk not work as hard. Click on Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Disk Defragmenter - click to highlight the C drive and click Analyse - then click Defragment. When this is completed repeat these steps for the D Drive if you have a D drive. Disk Cleanup and Defrag can take a long time to complete, especially if these tasks have not been for a long time.
Your a Doll for trying to help me, But I already know about Disk Clean up & Dafrag. Did everything I could think of to speed this thing up. It's a USED mint condition 2006 Compaq with windows vista.I put in most of the FREE upgrades so I can play games on facebook, But it still MEGA drags. Anything else you can suggest would be appreciated. Thanks.

Have you tried to run the game using Windows compatibility mode?
You can do this by right-clicking on the game's launch icon and selecting "Troubleshoot compatibility" from the drop-down menu.
Select the operating system from the list which worked with your game.
Windows 7 will apply settings which replicate the version of Windows you choose from the list.

SOURCE: my Dell optiplex gx270 makes noise after i installed windows vista it has become slow too
Check your HDD it might got some bad sectors/tracks, mostly noise comes for that only
