This problem is caused by either the starter capacitor or the in-tank check valve. Ez to check. With no air in tank, start compressor; if motor hums or has difficulty suspect capacitor. If motor starts, partially fill tank and unplug the power. Check for air leaking at the pressure switch or air coming out of the air inlet (remove the air filter). If air leaking, replace check valve. If no air leaking, again let out all the from the tank and connect power. Allow the compressor to fill and shut-off. After the compressor fills, again listen for air leaking from the pressure switch unloader valve. If air continues to leak from unloader, replace the check valve. Good luck
I would guess that unless it is stilol under warranty. To repair the unit will cost more than to replace it. I did not find any recalls. If you want to get parts here is a link.
Hope this helps.

1.Check the motor first. You can readily see if it's burned or not. Run a megger test on the motor. Test run the motor without the compressor. 2. If, it does not run, have it checked at the motor rewinding shop. 3. Once it is okey, remount the motor, and start it up.
certain utilities from salvationdata or acer lab can help one do a firmware back up and restore, also certain hard drive companies like seagate and wd have firm ware backup and restore utilities, hitachi has its firm ware saved in three places on the harddrive in the SA areas as SA A SA B AND SA C. one has to have hdd hitachi from salvation data to back up firm ware , which i feel is an expensive affair. or just go to a recovery guy and ask for firm ware upgrade done by salvation data or acer equipments if the charges are exorbitant , let me know the firm ware of your hitachi drive and i will try to give it to you. pm me if you are not in a position to back up by any of my recommended methods
Send it to TechRx, Inc. we are a data recovery company in Wisconsin. We offer free shipping and estimates. I have specific tools (hardware) that will SA emulate Hitachi drives; and that makes for easy recovery of your data. http://techrxgb.com
There is a seal between the compressor and the motor that in failed condition will leak oil into motor windings causing burnt oil smell. Some hitachi compressors suffered from failed valves or head gasket causing extra heat but not oil smell. These compressors also have a thermobreaker built into the windings that when failed will prevent motor from starting or would start and run for only a few moments then open. This part is not replaceable. enjoy
