    I have the same problem, but with CDRW discs. As far as I know you don't have to format CDRW discs, but each time I want to use one it tells me I need to format and then tells me it can't complete. Very annoying. I have searched the internet for a solution, but haven't been able to find one yet.

    I have a similar problem :( and with vista business edition. If I insert a CDRW to burn something, it attempts to format and says "Windows was unable to complete the format".

If capacity changes, there must be something wrong with the memory chip. then you can't format it by common solution.
try formatting it with Command Prompt or professional tool.

btw, if no method can help you, then you'll have to buy a new pen drive.
good luck

My 4GB pen drive store only 1GB data.when I sent more than 1GB data it shows system error.how can I solve it?

most likely the device ( pen drive ) is unable to use 4 gb of memory and thats why you have errors.

it could also be that you need to format the card correctly before use

I cannot format my 1GB pen drive. It gives the message ''Windows was unable to format''.

Please buy pen drive below 8gb because after you may face problems (file system problem,formatting ,etc.)
So my dear friend don't loose your money to buy more capacity pen drives they are all fake.
Hope this will help you my advice.

If i am helpful please rate me.
Thank you.

Unable to format the cruser pendrive

Far too often these little things have an almost invisible read/write protect button on them. Look carefully, over the entire surface of the USB Flash Drive. You might have this switch turned to Write Protect, which means there is nothing you can do, until you turn it the other way, and allow the device to be written to.

Cheers!

How to format a pen drive?

I know about this problem and the solution.

First, you should know your pen drive is infected with a virus. You can't usually repair it, you'lll just have to format it, and I'm getting to that.

Now, Before you format the pen drive, you might want to preserve some files in the drive?

Instead of trying to view the pen drive by double clicking or right click=>open TYPE the ASSOCIATED DRIVE LETTER at the RUN DIALOG BOX (start=>run)

Eg:
If your pen drive is assigned to drive E:
Start=>Run
Type "E:" (without quotes) and hit enter.
It should open.

Now you will probably see some weired .exe file, probably named fun.exe. That's the virus. You just cant delete it. BUT you can copy the rest of the imprtant files to your hard drive.

TO FORMAT
Start=>Run
type "cmd" (without qoutes) and hit enter
type "format/x E:" (without qoutes and mind your spellings and spacing. REPLACE "E:" with the associated drive letter of the pen drive)
Hit enter.

Hope my info fixes your problem,
Thanx for using fixya.
