well , if the head makes noise its sure is not the cable.
99% sure.
use $5 stethoscope to cluster face, some needles scream.
hear that , as is common, its the ***** scream, of IM AT END OF MY LIFE, (needle bushing shot) btw no speedo shops in usa will touch this cluster, not one.

the cable can vibrate, and make a weak sound
but if rusted, inside, rust can cause any sound it wants.
thank about that. but will be in the cable not the head.

do not put grease in the rear of the head, it will migrate in to the head and wreck it.
use a new cable, it has non migratory grease inside.

the last one i did, had to buy 3 used heads to make one good one.
good luck on car this old, finding past that work.
both suzuki and geo no longer sells heads. so.....

the problem is in the speedometer head it will need to replaced or repaired at a speedo shop.

u may need to replace the gear in the transmission to get it to work

There is a retainer clip that holds the speedometer cable snug in the transmission, that is the only thing you can tighten. Anything else that is loose is worn out and needs to be replaced.

The speedometer drive and driven gears inside the transmission needs replacing

the cable needs to be replaced to solve this problem

sounds like an instrument cluster failure or a computer problem.

You need to remove the cable from inside its housing and put some grease on it. can't remember which end it slides out from. try the bottom first.

replace it , sounds like internal fray in cable

I have a 1997 tacoma with 84,000 miles. i have the same problem and took the instrument cluster out. the problem appears to be with the speedometer cable and i plan on replacing it.
