The issue is probably your exhaust fan on your microwave comes on automatically when it detects a certain temperature. Mine does this as well but will turn off automatically after temperature goes down.

Fan comes on by itself and won't turn off.

Is it a micro hood? If so, and you're cooking on the stove below, it may be that the microwave is getting too warm. Some of them have an automatic fan the comes on when you're cooking below them - especially when boiling potatoes or something else steamy.

Try unplugging it for a few seconds or turning off the circut breaker to it. This usually resets the unit.

You may need to replace the keypad. I found there was moisture causing the problem when we boiled water on the right side of our stove which is under the keypad. I let the microwave dry out for several days and now only use the left side of stove when we boil water and have not had the problem.

My Sharp carousal microwave model R 1482 goes on and off on its own. When cooking the steam from boiling water will set the micro off like I am pushing buttons on it.

If it's just the hood vent exhaust fan coming on, that's normal due to a temperature sensor (the hood vent exhaust TCO / thermostat).

If other functions on the microwave are coming on, then the keypad and / or controls may be shorting due to moisture and / or heat, and that needs to be addressed.

You should always run the microwave oven's hood vent exhaust fan whenever you're cooking on the stove top.

If you do, and the trouble persists, I would suspect the controls.

Microwave turned off

I always suggest that the hood / exhaust fan be on whenever you're cooking on the stove top. This helps keep grease and steam out of the controls.

The first thing to try is a "hard reset". Unplug it from the power line for a minute, plug it back in, set the clock, then try again.

Let us know if the hard reset doesn't fix it.

Otherwise, you may have a bad controller, which we may be able to repair for you.

Was boiling water on the stove and had the fan going on my built in microwave and now the control panel doesn't work. I had to unplug it in order to shut the fan off. Model #MQSV115E.

It may have gotten steam into the controls despite the fact that you had the hood / exhaust vent fan on, which is proper procedure.

The best bet is to either let it set unplugged for a day or two in hopes it will dry out, or unplug it, remove the control panel and dry it out with a hair dryer (but not too close - don't want to melt anything).

At our site (below), we now have a video available showing how to remove a typical control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

If you have had it unplugged for a while, it may have dried out enough to work.

If the fan still stays on all the time, the hood fan thermostat may have opened up, too.

If all this fails, it may need repair on the control panel assembly.

Please feel free to contact me directly if you need more help.

We do that for customers nationwide for $39.95 in most case, but we also offer loads of free do-it-yourself tips and advice.

Microwave problem

Is it possible that grease or moisture got into the controls? This can happen when cleaners are sprayed directly on the keypad; when boiling is done on the stovetop without the hood vent fan being on; when the hood vent filter is clogged; or due to restricted airflow in exhaust. The best way to check the airflow is to turn the hood vent fan on and use your hand to feel at the exhaust outlet outside the home. Moisture can cause the keypad or control board to short to some degreee, and produce odd results. It may clear up, but sometimes it requires that the keypad be replaced or that the board be professionaly cleaned. If you or a friend decide to work on it, we have *critical* safety, disassembly, and troubleshooting info (as well as a text file which helps in diagnosing and repairing door switch problems) at our site, which is linked at our listing here on FixYa: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk We also repair microwave control boards for customers nationwide for $39.95.
