Sounds like it's out of time just a little bit and the tip of the needle is just catching the shuttle.

SOURCE: Needle touches a metal part and makes a weird noise!

Check your bobbin...make sure the handle is pointing upward.

SOURCE: needle not picking up bottom thread

Remove the needle plate and the bobbin case.

Ensure that the needle is inserted all the way up into the needle clamp.

Set the machine for straight stitch, center needle position.

Slowly turn the handwheel in the normal sewing direction and observe the following hook timing setting:

When the needle reaches it's lowest point and travels up 3.5mm, the point of the hook should be directly behind the needle, or at least within 1 or 2mm.

Another view is as the hook passes the needle, it should pass the needle slightly above the eye of the needle.

If the timing looks good, use some alcohol on a bit of cloth to clean the hook, careful around the tip of the hook as it is very sharp.

If the hook timing is off, you will need to take it to a knowledgeable service person as there are several possible solutions and several other related adjustments which will need to be made.

SOURCE: should I oil my Elna 3005 sewing machine?

Many of the new models do not require oiling.

Check the maintenace section of the manual for cleaning the shuttle area. Sometimes lint can build up and cause the machine to get noisy.

If it has been over a year since the machine was serviced, it may be time for a proffesional tune-up.

SOURCE: Elna Carina service

Search yellow pages for local sewing machine repair men, then ring them and ask if they can replace the capacitors on your machine. If they start talking knowledgably about the Carina then I'd take it to them. In user groups, these types of technicians are called OSMG (old sewing machine guy) and they are worth their salt. There is also White Sewing Center in USA. website www.whitesewingcenter.com, and they specialise in Swiss Elnas.

II am having my Elna Carina cleaned and the guy that cleans it say if the bladder quits we can trash our machine as they don't make that part. What is the bladder? Thank you for you help!

He may be referring to the bellows perhaps, its the part inside on the right where the foot control air line connects in, they can fail and there's no parts available new from the factory now as the Swiss manufacturing factory closed down. But could try to repair it by using a rubber type adhesive if the bellows has a hole. Other option is find a parts machine that's still good. the carina is a beautiful machine and there's owners that keep theirs going.

My Elna carina disks won't work. They just run backward with a big stitch.

Likely it needs a thorough comprehensive clean/lube. Over time the lubricating grease hardens preventing internal cams and levers from functioning properly.

A machine sewing in reverse is a common issue when feed dog linkage is stuck from failed lubrication. You may be able to oil just the feed dog linkage. Possibly just below the needle plate, but more likely you will need remove the bottom cover plate.

I have an Elna Carina SU sewing machine and it will only sew in very small stitches and can not adjust it what is the problem

sounds like the needle bar is gunked up, has it had a service recently? ie the past two years. Has it been used regularly or has it been away for a while and now pulled out and found this problem. All machines if left for a while, internally the oil dries up and that combined with any dust or lint forms a real gunk on the moving parts. Often this results in no swing on the needle bar, ie the machine will only produce a straight stitch, no needle swing. Take it into the shop for a good clean and service.

I used a single cam in my Elna Carina and I can't remove it. help!

ELNA Carina Instruction Manual

Perhaps the spindle where the cam sets needs a drop of good quality sewing machine oil, like Tri-Flow Synthetic Lube. Be sure the stitch length & width are set to Zero.

I just had the same question for servicing of my Elna Carina. I contacted customer support for Elna and received the following e-mail: "Elna machines can be serviced by most authorized Elna dealers. If you need to locate an authorized Elna dealer in your area, please visit our official website at: www.elnausa.com and click on “Dealer Locator” on the top right hand side of the page."

Elna Carina Zig'Zag Stitch Issue

Over time, and especially when not used, there is a likelihood of dust and old oil forming a sort of glue, or clag....

Remove the needle for safety, then, when you have the setting on Zig zag, gently push the needle arm to the opposite side of the zig stitch.......release the needle arm, and if it springs back quickly, it is fine, if it moves slowly, or almost not at all, then the clag needs removing with application of few drops of methylated spirit to start, at the sort of piston affair that shifts needle arm L & R .....move the needle arm back & forth until it frees up, a drop of oil to finish.........if almost seized, may require leaving overnight after using a penetrating lubricant if it is really resistant....I have had them on the bench for 3 days with manual manipulation a few times each day before they finally come good.
