I have a macbook pro with 10.7.5. The printer is connected via USB and will print normally but the scanner will not connect when I click the scan button in the print and scan window. This printer/scanner worked normally last week on a windows PC. I can't get ink level data on the mac either so it seems that I'm sending data but not receiving data from the printer. I have installed the drivers from Apple. I have also tried to scan from Preview and Image Capture and none of these options can find the scanner.

Here's how to solve the print problem from the Mac. I still haven't figured out how to solve from a PC yet.

Goto www.hp.com
Select "Support & Drivers"
Type in your printer model "HP450C"
You will be routed to a selection list, where you will be able to download the MAC drivers.
I recommend that you unplug the Printer from your Mac first, install the new drivers/software for the printer, then plug in the printer for a clean smooth install.
Thank you....

These instructions will fix the majority of scanner problems and networking problems using ethernet:

The key is to assign a static ip address for the printer. The install problems of trying to get the HP printer to be found will go away. You can then use the scanner. Also...it is crucial that when connecting other laptop's and PC's on the same network that you use the hp printer'rs host name to find the printer on the network. I find that the IP address can and usually fails to find the hp on the network. Mostly likely you cannot search the network for a hp printer until you go the route of find the hp network printer with the host name of the printer. You will also need your install disk when installing on other networl laptop's and PC's since windows xp and Vista machines don't have the drivers in the list. You will need to point the add printer gui driver to the disk and look for autorun.inf
file. After selecting that file...you can then see your drivers.

Go to your network and sharing center. Choose homegroup and sharing options. Change advanced sharing settings. Under your home or work profile, scroll down to file sharing connections. Switch to enable file sharing for devices that use 40 or 56 bit encryption. If that does not work, under password protected sharing, select "turn off password protected sharing". This is not recommended if you use your computer in multiple locations (laptop). I have found that turning all of these features off, running a scan from the printer successfully and then turning them back on, Windows seems to be comfortable allowing the printer to connect to the computer.
