My fleet just started overheating. I changed the water pump and thermostat about 5 months ago, Since then i haven't had any major problems as far as cooling. My A/C fan comes on when the compressor pops on. The large fan seems to come on when the thermostat opens. Whats do you think?
This engine has a cam driven water pump. If the gear is sheared/broken it can cause this issue.
As L98 said, on this engine the water pump is cam driven, on my 94, there is a splined shaft sticking out from the cam cover about one inch. There is a matching splined shaft on the water pump, also sticking out about an inch. A little splined coupling about 2 inches long connects the two shafts and transfers power from the cam to the water pump. On mine the splines on the water pump end of the little coupling wore out and the coupling was spinning on he water pump shaft but not turning the impeller. It made a whining noise. Splines on water pump were almost worn out so I changed the pump also.
