Sounds like you have a failing enclosure, are you still under warranty?
If you're under warranty and have other copies of all your files, simply visit the western digital website and file a warranty claim. They are very good about replacing any drives that fail.
If you do have files you'll need recovered then you do have a cheap solution to try before commiting to more expensive solutions. It will void your warranty but frankly the warranty is useless if you need your files.
Take your drive to a PC shop and ask the technicians to test the hard drive in a new enclosure. If you're lucky it's just a failure in the enclosure and you should be back in business for less than $50.
