I would check the brush roller and make sure it turns good and replace the belt on it . When you smell burning rubber most of the time it is the belt .
I had the same problem,you need to install a NEW FAN KIT //it contains a fan, a new drive arbor(the cone shaped end that drives the belt) and a new KIRBY BELT after markets sucks,if you are mechanically inclined it will take you about 15 minutes reason is that the arbor wears out changing it's diameter//thus tension on the belt and it get's "glazed" causing the belt to slip//another possibility is the brush roller//the ball bearings dry out and cause ALOT of resistance causing to belt to slip on the ARBOR/ take the brush roller out of the head and try to turn the end caps . IF they feel tight or rough you have to replace the roller also.
