I had the same problem with my laptop. The help I received at the tech office was zero. Maybe you can buy a second hand pad with intact screen to fit. Techos will want you to buy a new pad.
Try sitting the leap pad in a bowl of uncooked rice (the rice will absorb moisture) leave it in there for a day or 2, then try again, with new batteries.
Did it come with the batteries installed or seperate? Make sure they work in another device after they charged for 24hrs.

According to their website, leapfrog says that immersing your device in water will void the warranty. what many people do with their iPhones is put them in a bowl of dry rice, maybe this will help?
i think the anti virus software is blocking the leappad connect software. go to antivirus settings, under firewall rules, select allow for leappad connect the launch it and try again.
I just had the same exact problem. We followed the leap pad recommendations for cleaning the stylus connection. Then we used a q-tip to clean the cartridge port and blew into it. Now it works.
