Cobra 29 refuses to calibrate

Cb is installed, all grounding is complete, power source connected, I start to calibrate it w the gain, squelch, and volume all turned to complete low and as I turn the toggle to calibrate it is set @ the red mark, then I go to select swr and the reading is beyond the red cal mard, what am I doing wrong or is the coax to short @ 8' ft, should it be the normanl 18' ft with it all tucked under a seat ?

SOURCE: Cobra 29 SWR, cal meter

Hello there:
Rule of thumb is go by what the manual tells you. providing it is the manual that is for the radio.. that is why they make manuals for that particular radio a 1-1 to a 1-2 swr rating is really good providing you have no saturation on the internal filter. over saturation due to swr being set too high will eventually burn out the finals of a radio
i have delt with radio's for about 17 years now so i really suggest consult the users manual and always use only a authorized dealer for that particular radio just like my cobra 2000 i am not going to send it to a shop that just does radios i want a authorized cobra dealer ok i hope that this really helps ok please dont forget to give this solution a rate for me it helps me out so i can continue to help out others like yourself.
best regards
MICHAEL

SOURCE: I just took my cobra

You seem to have a short or an open circuit . Could be a PL259 connector problem, the ant. is defective and can possibly be a bad ground. Try to add an extra GND. from the ant. base to a central GND. point...This will include the power neg. lead from the radio.
PLS E. Note: If the O/P POwer shown when you key up to check SWR is higher than usual this
will indicate a definate ant. problem................GOOD LUCK and have fun learn'n ! ! !

Cobra 29 refuses to calibrate

Check for a short in the Coax. Is the antenna near the cab of a truck or other body part? Is the antenna grounded? Has your radio been peeked and tuned?

Cb has power but no squelch,can't recieve or transmit

Begin with
  • Volume knob 12 o'clock position
  • Squelch knob full counter clockwise
  • RF gain knob full clockwise
  • Pa/CB switch to CB
  • Mic plugged in
  • Check coax and antenna connections.
  • Make sure your antenna gommet/insulator is installed correctly or it will directed gound. Treat antenna shaft as it is the positive portion of circuit.
If you have another CB check the antenna system with that rig. To verify it is a radio issue. Then dig deeper Microphone, PLL chip, Audio chip etc.

Have k40 antena in my 29 ltd cobra and i cant get less then 1/2 mile signal

Hi, my name is John. A K40 is a great antenna. Make sure you have it in a good place, such as top of vehicle, a good ground, and SWR checked, they can check it for you free at Radio Shack or CB shack.....if that does not do it, let me know, it could be something internal....hope this was helpful....

Reception is very poor. Grounding issues? Please

Reception has little to do with grounding. The ground plan is for transmitting. As long as the coax is connected and is in good standing, it should receive fine regardless of grounding.

There are a few reasons you may have bad reception.
  1. Turn the RF GAIN all the way up. This is your receive sensitivity.
  2. Squelch is too high. It should only be turned up enough to cut out the background noise.
  3. Poor antenna. If the antenna is cheap, and not made well, this could be the problem.
  4. Not enough of the antenna above the vehicle. It needs to be at least 60% of the antenna above the vehicle.
Hope this helps!

New radio

Hi,

Assuming no hardware faults, start with the basics, on powering on the radio:
1. RG Gain max clockwise;
2. Ch 9/NOR to Normal;
3. Delta Tune to mid position;
4. CB/PA to CB;
5. Squelch to minimum counter clockwise;
6. Channel selector to desired channel.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.
