For anything you plug in or just certain things? Before the sound stopped, did you change the sound output to something different? Do you have external speakers plugged in?
If the built-in speakers on the tv are not working, plug the television into a set of external speakers, select the output in the menu accordingly and test them. If they work, might be the speakers are blown or the menu configuration is wrong.
Always check the simplest things first, then work your way up to the harder/more expensive issues.
Rule out speakers, speaker board, connectors, external speakers, components attached to television, etc.

My Sony tech says it's most likely a bad cable box. Try a DVD and if the DVD is fine then it's for sure your cable box. Needs to be replaced by the cable company.

Try the format, aspect buttons on the Box remote, if the line is there on every input and effect the TV menu your panel (screen) is bad.
A new panel would cost as much as a new TV.

In most cases is the screen is covered with vertical lines all the way accross the screen then the T-Con module is at fault. The t-con board is replaceable without having to replace the entire LCD panel which would usually make it cheaper than replacing the TV. The part number I come up with is 1-857-213-11. Most of the time the " T-Con" board is the cause. On a lot the Sony models, this board is not replaceable without replacing the LCD Panel. Sony has been making more of them available but you would need to check with Sony's Parts Department if it is available for your Model.

I have a Sony Bravia model KDL-46s5100 that had the same problem. All HDMI ports stopped working. I don't know why this works but unplug the TV for about 30 sec, then plug it back in and hold down the power button on the tv for 10 seconds. Like I said I don't know why this works but it worked for me. Good luck.
