When the dishwasher goes to the rinse cycle the black solenoid moves down to open the drain valve, the leak comes from the seal of the valve shaft above the solenoid. how do i remove the shaft to replace the seal? do i have to take the whole thing apart? will the shaft come out if i pull really hard?

You can easily screw up the drain diverter arm trying to replace that seal. Repair is difficult. Pump assembly is rather expensive. (especially considering this was not a top of the line model) You would be much better off replacing the dishwasher. The new GE models are much quieter and have eliminated the center tower in almost all models.

you may have a pinhole in your drain hose

There may be something in the drain line that that is limiting the flow. A cherry pit for example. Remove the drain line where it connects to the pump inlet (or valve is there is one) below the washer and see if there is anything clogging it there.

Check your air gap on your drain. It should be located on or around your sink. Sometimes food and other trash will stop it up and will not let your dish washer drain. The cap should unscrew off .Good Luck.
