Memory card error Canon ELPH530HS

Hi, I keep getting a memory card error. I'm using a PNY micro SDHC 32 GB card. My son formatted the camera and it was working but the next time I tried to use it I get the error, this has happened twice. How can I reformat the camera and have it stay formatted so I don't keep getting this error? Bev

SOURCE: I have a new Canon

Insert the card into a card reader and format it on the computer. See if that works. Format using FAT32 as its more reliable than the FAT it uses by default. If the camera supports FAT32 you can expect it to last atleast a year before you need to format it again

If your old memory card was "busted" is it possible youhave damaged the memory card holder/reader in the camera?
Anyway, seems memory card problems are not uncommon with this camera.
It might be worth your while to have a look at http://web.canon.jp/imaging/eosd/firm-e/eos
This enables a firmware update which may (or may not) fix your problem.

It's a lost cause. The A540 works with SD cards. While SDHC cards will fit into the slot, they are electronically incompatible and will not work in devices not designed for them. You need to stay with SD cards, 2GB and smaller.

Normally, you can only insert an SD card one way. Try a different SD card or check to see if the SD card you're using has the "write protect" switch on. If that's not the issue try formatting the card in your PC and then format it in the camera.

What's your problem? My PNY 16Gb sdhc mememry card keeps saying card error in my camera

There are several possible causes for "memory card locked", "memory card error", or "no memory card". The most common cause is having the tiny slide switch on the side of the card in the wrong position. The second most common is trying to use a 4GB or higher SDHC card with an older camera made before SDHC format came out. There are also other common causes if the above didn't help, with troubleshooting steps for this problem listed here.

The camera reads memory card error but when I go to the menu to format the card the format catagory is not highlighted and when you page down it skips over the format area. I am using a scan disk mobile...

There are no 16GB SD cards. A card that size is actually an SDHC card (yours actually sounds like a Micro-SDHC card). SD and SDHC cards fit the same slots, but they are slightly different. Many cameras won't work with the SDHC (high capacity) cards. SDHC is not backwards compatible.

You really don't need a card this size on a still camera. 1Gb is plenty. If you really need more space, you can carry a spare, like people used to take extra films with them on holiday.

I don't know why the 512Mb card is giving you trouble. This might indicate an actual fault.

Here's the specs for your camera from Canon. Sorry, but an SDHC card is not listed as compatible with your camera. Only SD or MMC. Now look on your 16 and 32GB cards. You'll see SDHC stamped there. Although SDHC looks exactly the same as a standard SD card, the format the cards use are very different. Unfortunately your camera was designed before the SDHC format came out.
You'll need to instead purchase a standard SD card (those that are 2GB or less). Fortunately these are very inexpensive these days, with 2GB cards going for around $6 with shipping.

Camera will not accept any memory card over 2GB. Keeps saying "Memory Card Error"

Most new 4GB and larger cards are SDHC cards (look on the card). Although they look exactly the same as a standard SD card, they are not. Unfortunately, there is no way that these cards will work with your camera, as it was designed before the SDHC format came out. As you've dsicovered, 2GB and less are standard SD cards, and will work with your camera.

There were a few standard 4GB cards produced a few years ago, most notably by ADATA (I have one that I use in my A620). Unfortunately, these are rare now, and are somewhat expensive if found on eBay.

Whwthwr Canon IXUS 700 can accept Micro SDHC card

Sorry, but according to Canon's technical specs, your camera was designed only for use with standard SD card format. SDHC format will not work with it, and will likely give you a memory card error.
