Question about Dell Inspiron 8500 Notebook
Fails to send signal to external monitor, PC itself won't shut down even with on/off button, fan running noisy. Would like to shut down so I can reseat the memory module but cannot turn off the machine.

The symptoms you described are normally common motherboard failure signs.
Try removing the ram and hard drive from the computer and then try booting the computer.

This may be a really stupid question, but you could have overlooked it... Are you sure the power cable is attached to the laptop correctly? It seems like it's just short of power.
