Lithium batteries do have a life span determined by how many times the battery is discharged and recharged and how hard it is worked on the tool. Batteries get hot while charging and discharging and heat is what ages batteries. Lithium batteries, depending on usage, will last from one to three years. I've seen some last five years but that's rare. They also have numerous cells and a circuit board that can go bad and kill the battery. Chargers are designed to check the battery's condition and won't charge a battery if it detects something wrong. If your battery is under one year old, it's covered by the warranty. If it's over, you'll have to buy a new battery.

this normaly happens when the battery has been kept in cold conditions . keep your batteries indoors try sitting them on a radiator for a short period and they should take a charge . cold weather effects the cells in lithium ion batteries .

You say will not stay charged? Over what time period? Are you aware Nicad and NiMh rechargeables discharge naturally at 1% per day so where does that leave your power tool after 3 months? Furthermore they only have around 1000 charges in their useful life so you can immediately see how these tools are not for intermittent(ie handyman) use.

SOURCE: MAKITA LI-ION 18V BATTERIES WILL NOT CHARGE

I have had 3 battiers of the new 18v LXT go out on me. And then I had one of my drills burn up that was one of the new 18v LXT. I am stuck with the grinder, skill saw, 2 impact drivers, sawzal, flash light, and a drill. I only have one battery left and 2 chargers. That is funny. I will never buy any more Makita tools in my life.

New 18v Makita battery flashes red on first charge in normal weather conditions. It was a display model at the store so would this be a junk battery?

Yes. The battery is junk. Hundreds of people have picked up that demo and pulled the trigger over and over until the charge was totally depleted. After sitting on the shelf totally dead for so long, it won't take a charge anymore.

My Makita BHP451 Li ion battery drill periodically the varible speed does not work, ie. the button works as a on/off switch - any idea what's wrong. Thanks Bjarne

Bjarne, odds are the variable speed function of the trigger is failing. There are Makita repair centers that perform repair, and sell parts if you want to take it on as a DIY project. Before proceeding, I would make sure the warranty has expired. If it is still in warranty a Makita repair center should repair it for no charge.

looks like you need new batteries. Is no matter if you don't them use frequently. Is a matter of the life of the batts. But try to charge them for at least 24 hrs to see if they wake up again.

When putting the battery in the charger the red and green lights flash indicating a bad battery, cannot charge battery.

Have you tried just waiting a few minutes, it might start to charge anyway. But if not, is there some reason you would assume that you don't have a bad battery? There are lots of bad Li-Ion batteries.

Switch and bateries

Makita makes two 12V Ni-Cad pod batteries: Battery 1222/2.0Ah (PN: 192598-2) and Battery 1220/1.3Ah (PN: 192681-5). Makita's universal charger (PN: DC1804) will charge any Ni-MH or Ni-Cad pod or stick battery from 7.2V to 18V.

Join the battery collectors club. I have 25 batteries, 12 guns, I quit buying the batteries, I found it cheaper to buy the gun with new batteries and charger once a year. Cause they don't even last that long. I have tried different brands too all the same. Got batteries?? Sure do.

My 18 volt makita battery wont charge and it is less than a year old. Do you know y? Can i fix it?

Those batterys need to be on the charger if they are not in the tool. I would try to get the store to exchange the entire set for a new one. If that fails ebay sells batterys pretty cheap.
