Is the HP website really that bad?
I run lynux and it runs without the driver disk in black only due to the cartridge error everyone else is having trouble with.
Postage from UK will cost a fortune though....

You can download the drivers for your printer from this link---

HP F4280 printer's driver

After opening the link, select your operating system (win xp/vista,etc). After downloading the driver on to your computer, run the setup and install it. After installation is complete restart your computer.

Go to "print"and the drop down list should include a ticked "printer off line".

Click on this to remove tick and printing will continue.

Sounds like the drivers are not installing properly. Are you installing through the CD or downloading the drivers from the HP website. Since a lot of the new drivers are no longer supporting XP you will need to download a scrubber utility and delete all of the pre installed drivers and attempt to reinstall through a manual installation of the drivers.
