Your ability to install a second operating system on your Windows 7 system hinges on one thing: partitions. If your computer has only one partition, you can't dual-boot your system without erasing all information on your computer. Two hard drives, or two partitions, enables you to dual boot. Check this information first, before proceeding.

Click "Start" and type "disk management" into the search bar. Click on "Create and format hard disk partitions" in the list of programs to open "Disk Management." Look at the list of partitions and available drives. The information here will be different on every computer. "C" is your primary hard drive and active operating system partition, and this drive contains your Windows 7 installation. You can't install Windows XP here without formatting the system. Check for secondary drives and partitions in Disk Management. Your system may have a "D" or "E" drive. Some computer manufacturers create a hidden partition with recovery software: don't remove this partition. If you have a secondary partition called "D" with more than 2GB of free space, you can install Windows XP here. b> Installing XP b> Insert the Windows XP Setup disc into your CD or DVD drive and close any windows that appear. Shut down your computer with the disc in the drive. Turn the computer on and look for a message saying "press any key to book from CD." Press any key on your keyboard when this message appears. If your system doesn't recognize the disc, you will have to enter your BIOS and change the boot order. Look to your manual for information on changing the boot order. Press "Enter" on the "Welcome to Setup" screen to load the Windows XP setup program. Read the license agreement and press "F8" to accept. Windows will detect that an operating system is already installed on your primary partition and present a list of other partitions to install XP. Use the arrow keys to select your secondary partition ("D") and press "Enter" to confirm that you want to install XP here. Then choose what to do with the partition: leave the file system intact or format the partition using FAT32 or NTFS. Windows XP supports both file systems, but requires NTFS on partitions larger than 32GB. You don't need to format the drive to install XP. Follow the prompts on screen to enter your personal information, serial number, and date and time. The setup program copies files to your PC and reboots -- don't press a key to boot to the CD. When you have to operating systems installed, a DOS screen appears asking you to choose an OS; press the down arrow key to highlight Windows XP and press enter to complete the setup. You will have to choose this every time to boot into XP, otherwise your computer will boot to Windows 7 by default. Hope this helps.

What error do you see in the bleu screen of ***** bsod?

You go into Boot Menu, and set the - first boot device to CDROM.
The computer will then read what is in the optical drive, first.

Computer off, press the Power On button. Watch closely for the blue dell logo.
Looking at the bottom of the monitor screen when the blue Dell logo comes up, you will see - F2 = Setup.
At the top right of the screen you will see F12 = Boot Menu.

This screen goes by F-A-S-T!
As SOON as you see the blue Dell logo press the F12 key.

If you miss this small window of opportunity, just wait for Windows to fully load, then click on Start, Turn Off Computer, and Restart.

If Windows is not loading, then press the CTRL, ALT, and DELete keys at the SAME TIME. (Not shouting)
This will restart your computer so you can try again.

Upon entering Boot Menu you cannot use your mouse anymore, you have to use the keyboard.

The Boot Device Menu has the devices listed, and each device has a number next to it.

At the bottom of the menu, type the number that is next to CDROM, then press the Enter key.

You may have to remove and reset the HDD and Memory on the unit.
Next, you will recv. the F-2 to continue or F-12 to enter setup.
Enter setup and change date and time.
Save and try.
You may have a damaged HD or boot partition and reloading the operating system will be necessary.

Reseating the HD will assure that you have a good connection and the same with the memory.

Also, if the unit has been dropped, you may have a damaged HD and may need to change it.

First boot computer with xp isk.
Then follow the procedure then delete all partition and create again .then install in first partition try this 3 to 5 times you can able to install/
Aslo refix your RAM memory check your winxp disk to that it is fine.

if you're not worried about anything on the computer:
insert the recovery CD, boot the system to the CD, and reinsatll windows.

There are 2 steps you can do to fix the problem

1. Change the USB Emulation Setting in the BIOS
NOTE: It is recommended to disconnect any USB devices before performing the following steps.
Restart the system.
Wait until the Dell Logo appears.
At the Dell Logo screen, press F2 right away to enter the System Setup.
The System Setup screen will appear.
Press the down arrow key to highlight Integrated Devices (LegacySelect Options).
Press Enter.
A small box with a list of devices appears in the middle of the screen.
Press the down arrow key to highlight USB Emulation.
The default setting is On.
Press the Space Bar on your keyboard to change the setting to No Boot.
Press the Esc key.
The small box disappears.
Press the Esc key again.
A small box with list of options appears in the middle of the screen.
Make sure that Save Changes and Exit is highlighted in blue.
Press Enter.
The system will then restart.
The recommended changes have now been made to the BIOS.

2. Reset the Dell Dimension desktop System Setup (BIOS) to factory defaults.
Restart the system.
The Dell logo screen appears.
Press F2 to enter the System Setup (BIOS).
The System Setup screen appears.
Press the ALT + F key combination.
Press the Esc key to Save and Exit.
Press Enter to Save changes and exit now.
The BIOS is now set to the default settings.

Here is the cause, and I think you will have to re-install the operating system. Not knowing your machine model number, I have no idea if the operating system recovery is imbedded in the hard drive or not.

If you receive a blue Dell line across the top of the screen during power up, press F11 to see if you can get into the recovery mode. If so, just follow the instructions.
