Emachine W6409 will no longer turn on

Well my computer crashed i believe. i tried rebooting it with a cd that i thought was the restore cd turned out to not be the one. when i would turn the computer on it would go no furhther than the xp logo and restart. i tried another cd, which again was the wrong restore cd. now it just goes to a black screen that says disk read error, please restart

Ok well I tried to run the XP CD but it still would not go past the screen that said disk error, please restart. I just bought a new hard drive today. The new screen is telling me that it is exiting PRE ROM or something like that and that I need to insert a bootable disk and hit any key. I inserted the cd that the drive came with and it still said that. I inserted the windows xp cd and it still says the same thing. What should I do now? I contacted the manufacturer of the product, but since its saturday they are closed.

Your hard drive is probably crashing or has crashed. You need to start your computer with an XP CD and try to use the repair function. You'll be able to tell if the hard drive is still working or not once you run the repair function. Let me know what happens or if you run into any problems.

You need to change the boot order so that the computer boots to the cd first, not the hard drive.

You can do this by changing the order in the bios.

Let me know if you run into any problems.

Back in 2000 i bought this computer, it didnt come with a disk, but system restore was working fine till around 2006, when system restore crashed and corrupted, and i've been playing my pc from that time...

OK, well since system restore has been damaged and no longer usable. There is only one thing you can do, and that is to obtain an XP SP2 Install CD, insert in to the CD drive and set BIOS to Boot from CD, when it does, choose full install, and Format you drive to NTFS, and go on to install the Windows XP SP2 software. This will then return your PC to the way it was originally.
It would pay also to obtain ALL the drivers for your PC, and store on a USB stick, that way you can install your network video card audio card etc, IF the XP install doesn't have them.. However usually XP will install Generic drivers just to get you going, and then you can go online and download the newest ones and install.
When you do this ALL information will be erased so anything you wish to save Back it up FIRST.

There are many places to obtain a XP CD, you could try www.thepiratebay.org you will need a torrent client to download this...

When i use the recovery cd for emachine w6409 it hang's up on wild tangent games. ital-ed for 2 hours

Fortunately you don't need wild tangent games for your PC to run correctly, Your restore CD should have options for either installing or NOT installing bundled software, choose that if possible or find a CD with a matching operating system and use that to install. You will need to have your CD-Key from the back of the Emachine handy. Don't worry, your PC will still pass verification and activation as long as you use your original license key.

How do i use a emachine restore disk on a compaq

You could try booting into safe mode and restoring your computer to a time before the update was installed. Was the update KB977165? If memory serves, this update may crash your system when you are infected. Read more here:
http://blogs.zdnet.com/hardware/?p=7377&tag=nl.e539

Try tapping F8 when you turn on your computer, select "Last known good configuration" and see if it will load the OS that way. If so, you will want to run some scans. I recommend Malwarebyte's Anti-malware to start:
http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html?tag=mncol

And then run an ESET Online scan
http://www.eset.com/onlinescan/

If last known good configuration doesn't work, try F8 boot again, selecting "Safe Mode", and go into system restore to restore your computer to a point before the update was installed.
in XP it is START>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore

Did this resolve your issue? If so, please rate it. ty.
