We have an old under bench Chef Auto 600 oven. Its a great oven, however yesterday the oven stopped heating (Its electric) All of the lights and the grill are still working so I am assuming it need the element replaced. Is this something we can do ourselves? (we did with our last oven, however it was more modern) and where do I find the model number? The oven is very old and I can see a sticker on the inside of the grill door but there is nothing written on it anymore? Is there a standard element that would work? Thanks
Good news!
You probably can do this yourself.
Most appliance parts stores will "demand" you give them a model number, but if you find an appliance store that has a smarter older employee, he or she can probably give you the right one by seeing the old one.
Also know the element may be fine.
Older appliances sometimes have bad wires from old age.
When you take this apart, look carefully at the wires that are connected to the socket that the element plugs in to.
You may find the only thing wrong is a bad wire.
Know also that wire connectors for high heat things like stoves are sometimes made stainless steel, for the high heat.
God bless your efforts.

electricity tripping was almost certainly caused by the element going faulty.
remove back panel inside oven and element is exposed and you can often see the damage. replacement is quite easy and get back to me if you want to proceed with repair

I just had a model 976-4CX put in...I have no manual...I'm trying to find one. I thought I had a problem with the element, dial or thermostat. The bottom worked, but the top stopped working. There are 2 timers with dials next to the clock labeled Start and Stop, and Push for Manual. Come to find out my problem was solved by adjusting the Start and Stop dials and/or pushing in for manual!?!
If I had a manual I'd know how these timers worked.

SOURCE: I have an old electric Chef Glendale 600 fan
There is a fuse in the back if you remove the rear panel. Check to see if the fuse looks good. If the element is bad, it won't effect the switch, light, or fan. The switch, light, and fan all run off of there own circuit. If that circuits is bad, has a burnt out fusible link, or the electrical circuit board they connect to is bad, then they won't work. You will likely need to trace the wiring from the control panel to the circuit that runs these three things. Use a volmeter to test for power and you can also use an ohmmeter to test for continuity of the circuit itself.

Hello,
Replacing the heating element isn't a bad idea. You will be needing a screw driver to achieve this. Follow the below instruction on how to successfully replace the heating element of your GE Oven.
