Recently our Wind Tunnel Vacuum decided to stop "self-propelling". I just now changed the belt that drives the spinning brushes. I also put the height Adjustment indicator on its highest setting. We have a berber carpet so it's a very low carpet. Even with the adjustment at the highest, when the brushes come in contact with the floor, they stop spinning, and the motor starts to smoke a bit from the strain. If I tilt the vacuum to the side, the brushes spin like crazy. It's almost as if the height adjustment doesn't do anything. I can tell it's changing the height a LITTLE bit, but not much. In fact from low to medium I don't think anything is happening, and overall the difference between low and high is very slight. Is there perhaps a worn spring or something I can replace?
You changed the belt that drives the brushroll, it is a flat stretch belt. The V belt also should be replaced every year or two max. It will not be stretched out like the flat belt but with normal use the side of the v will of wear off and the belt will be a little thinner which can cause it to slip on the pulley. The V belt drives the transmission. The flat belt goes from the transmission to drive the brushroll. The burning smell could come from the V belt if it's slipping real bad.

This is a typical problem you are describing. I would recommend you change the belts, this will resolve the "hard to push" and most likely resove your issues. based on the s/n given you maching was made on sept 2004.

Make sure you're not trying to adjust w/ handle in upright locked position because thewre is a cam which raises the vacuum head a little bit when handle is locked in upright position. If this is not the problem, turn vacuum upside down with handle in unlocked position and power cord not plugged in(for safety reasons obviously), unscrew and remove 3 screws that hold belt/beater brush assembly cover in place(2 are in corner near ends of beater brush and 1 is towards motor housing) tilt end of cover with 1 screw up and remove cover(there are 2 tabs at beater brush end of cover). Right above this is the height adjustment assembly with 2 rollers, raise up the assembly gently and using your finger or a bristle bottle brush, etc. make sure there is no debris caught between the height assembly and the hose(you will understand when you see it), if there is no debris you can now see the pattern on the bottom of the height adjustment knob and the lobe that rides on it, just check to make sure nothing is broken and/or missing, hope this helps!!

Move the carpet height control switch to a higher position if the vacuum is difficult to push. If the setting is too low for the carpet being cleaned, the brushes press against the floor preventing the vacuum from moving easily.Set to a medium-high height setting then check.Slide the "Self-Propel" button to the "ON" position if the cleaner does not self-propel.
-----------
The self-propel feature operates only when the cleaner switch
and the self propel button are both
ON.

Try this settings and check. This should help.Thanks.Helpmech.

One more thing - the brushes are clear of debris, I cleaned them completely.
