Bought 3 weeks ago, took 3 goes to correctly download Microsoft Office 365. Downloaded some sample games from internet from a couple of sites I had previously downloaded similar/same games from to previous laptop. Went to use computer last weekend and it began to boot up, going from a black screen to dark grey, then back to black and shut itself down before getting to the log on screen. How can I fix this problem? Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
If it's 3 weeks old return it. Or you can do a System Restore/Recovery. Take a look at this forum for the Restore/Recovery Procedure: http://en.community.dell.com/owners-club/alienware/f/3746/t/19441985.aspx

ok, do you have windows xp, windows vista, windows 7?
email me back whenever you can, i reply asap.
what i can do is recover all your data from it incase you can't get into your system or even log in, and back it up somewhere, maybe a dvd cd, till it gets fixed just to be assured your stuff is safe.

my educated guess is that is the video controller acting up. via playing games you may be pushing your display to unstable extremes. if your game supported by the hardware you have?
can you tune down the resolution? test and see what happens?
make sure you have the correct drivers. see manufacturer's page for update drivers for vista (which should work in win7)
have you tried running the game app in say winxp mode, more info found here
the clicking may be an indications of a failing hd. see on your computers documentation or bios if there's a way to test your hd, or simply download an application called speedfan that can give you an idea of your hd performance.. I would still do a back up as soon as possible as you never know when a hd decides to fail on you, (speedfan in itself is pretty safe so it won't damage your hd or anything).

try checking for updated drivers for your hd 5730. i have seen this in desktops with both ati and nvidia gpus.

Need the whole story;
1) What was the original problem?
A) Did you buy this laptop with the intent of repairing it,
Or
B) Is it your laptop, and you added/upgraded Ram Memory, and replaced the Thermal Paste? (Plus cleaned out the inside of the laptop)
A1) Did the seller indicate what the problem might be, or was it sold as a laptop for parts?
What did you replace first? Ram Memory or Thermal Paste?
B1) If your laptop; was there a problem, or did you just want to upgrade the Ram Memory, and replace the Thermal Paste?
Also would like full model number off of the bottom of the laptop.
(Not the S/N. S/N = Serial Number. ONLY give out to an authorized Dell agent, or repair shop )
Post back in a Comment.
