Coleman 1850 no/low generator output

My generator has been store for a few years, so i decided to try to start it. I had to clean the foat bowl and jet. after that, the engine started just fine. but did not seem to get up full speed, I cofirmed this by pluging a drill into it - the drill would only go half speed compared to house power. i try to play with the speed control at the carb and everything looks ok. now I have no gen output or maybe 12V at the 120 plug. don't know if blew something by running at low volt to hz ratio. two problems ? - any help?

Both the Hz and the voltage will be wrong if the engine speed is low. You need to use either a DMM with a HZ function to set the engine speed so that you get 61.5 Hz at no load, or use a tachometer to set the no load speed to 3750 rpm.

SOURCE: coleman 1850 sport, no/ low generator output

Hi,
The engine should run at 3750 rpm at no load. If that's OK then you may need to troubleshoot the capacitor inside the end of the generator opposite the rope. Since the thing has been stored for some time you may just need to flash the field of the generator to restore the residual magnetism in the rotor. The easiest way to do this is thru the 110 outlet but it's a little dangerous. Plug an old lamp cord into the outlet, start the generator, and momentarily connect a 9 volt dry cell to the wires, then shut the generator down and see if there is 110 when you restart it.
Regards,
Carl

I have a Coleman PowerMate 1850 and it fails to run more than a few seconds. The fuel, gas and switch are on but it sounds like it is not getting gas. I run the carb dry after each run and use a fuel...

sometimes if you "run dry" you can shrink the needle valve on the float bowl. when you fill with fuel it will get stuck in the hole that lets the fuel into the bowl.

Hello, I would check the carb for being dirty inside. It sounds like the needle valve is dirty, or not adjusted correctly, or there is rust in the carburator and any of these can cause the fuel not to feed into the engine properly. A good cleaning of the carb and proper setting of the needle valves should clean it up. Also check the screen in the fuel tank on the fuel valve.

I have a coleman 1850 sport madel.the unit runs

Due to vibration, it is very common for 1 or both of the wires to fall the switch. Also, due to placement of the switch, it can also fail due to water running down the inside of the generator housing as well.

The lack of DC output COULD possibly prevent the stopping. There are likely fuse(s) between the low voltage winding and a rectifier to generate the DC. SOMETIMES these are even inside the generator cover.

Engine speed varies

If the unit was stored for a long period of time (6-12 mo.) with gas in it, you may have a gummed up carburator. This is the most common problem with generators (lack of use)
The carb. would have to be removed & cleaned, specificly, the high & low speed jets

I have a Coleman Powermate Pulse 1850 Generator.

Hi,
If the generator hasn't been used for awhile the rotor may have lost it's magnetism. All you need is to re-excite it. There are several websites that explain how to do this. It's a good place to start.
