1GB SD cards are almost impossible to find these days. Some drugstores and supermarkets may carry them, but most department, electronics, and office-supply stores don't carry them. You should be able to buy 2GB SD cards at those places. Unless you specifically need a 1GB card, a 2GB card will work just as well. If you're willing go buy online (and pay for the shipping), you can still find some. Here's one example.

I think the software of your phone has corrupted. Take out the MMC card. Take a backup of your phone data and factory reset it. After this insert MMC. If it doesn't work do a hard reset. If that also doesn't work use the MMC cardin your computers card reader and take the back up. and take your phone to nearest service centre for reinstalling the software. i cannot actually get what is the problem here but if you trying to ask how to format the mmc you can use a card reader that has an MMC slot. this can be displayed automatically on your windows explorer. right click and choose format to format the MMC.
I'm not sure that this will be a once a for all answer, but the link below says that any device with an sd slot can handle mmc but devices with slots designed exclusively for MMC cannot handle SD.
Since the axim has an SD slot, I would say that it is compatible with MMC although I haven't tried an MMC card and the manual doesn't specific mention MMC memory.
