I had this too. I didn't read through the whole forum. But my same computer did that and when we talked to dell support we had to replace the whole hard drive. Fortunately it was under warranty and free!

I assume that you still have the OS software disk. If not then you are going to need Dell anyway.
That being said, when you see the Dell logo, hit F2. This will bring you to the boot setup menu and ask you from where do you want to boot. Insert your Operating System disk in the CD drive and then choose boot from CD drive. The computer will restart in normal mode and start to read the OS disk. You will be prompted after this to follow the directions.
If you do not have the OS disk, it may still be cheaper for you to contact Dell and order the disk than to have them do it all fo you over the phone from India. Hope this helps.
Please remember to rate this solution.

Hello,

This is due system overload, means that the system execute many executable files which causes the memory overload. this cause by virus and corrupted file system.

You can try booting you system in safe mode and then try to restore it in a previous functional dates.. if safemode is successful in booting then try click start, all programs, accessories, system tool then select system restore.

if this not successful then you have to back up your important files and then clean install is recommended. or insert your system recovery disk and boot it using the cd/dvd rom. follow the on screen instruction.

note in installing windows is here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316941

Hi, if you have an XP CD handy, just insert it and restart. use the f8 key during the dell splash screen(logo screen). you will want to select boot from disk. once this is selected, the re installation will proceed. I would suggest a full format and total re installation. the repair mode will not work because of the virus that is present.

TUTORIAL

Hope this helps , post back if you have any more trouble. Positive feedback would be appreciated.

  • Quickfx PC Repair Feb 19, 2009

What was the problem with the tutorial, you should just use the operating system disc they sent you. Boot your PC up, Press F2 or F8 or Del to get into your bios. Once inside look for something in reference to Boot sequence will be numbered 1-4 with Floppy, CD-ROM,HDD 0 you want to make CD-ROM to boot first. Put the Operating system disc in and reboot the pc. Now keep pressing space bar and it should boot from disc and you just follow instructions on the setup process. Post back if you have any more questions.

  • Quickfx PC Repair Feb 19, 2009

On that screen using the arrow keys navigate around and look for the boot sequence, the options will be HDD 0, CD ROM, and FLOPPY you want to make CD ROM first in the order so 1. CD ROM. Reboot your pc with the operating system disc in the cd rom. and keep pressing space bar untill you see it saying loading windows and the setup will start.

  • Quickfx PC Repair Feb 19, 2009

Better yet heres a TUTORIAL that shows how to do this step by step with some pictures. How to install XP on a Dell Inspiron..

Hope this helps leave positive feedback if it has, have a nice day :)

Unfortunately the only way you can save the data you lost or atleast have a chance of it is to use a non-OEM installation disc.. if you use the OEM one it will reformat your harddisk and you will loose all data..

If you do a reinstall you will lose all of the data. But you need to be able to boot up so you can at least make a backup of your files. Do you have a copy of XP or Vista whatever they loaded on your machines?

Before You even try reinstalling please try the recovery console and run a repair this will help if its a hive corruption.
Please ensure that you do not have any extra devices connected to the notebook. now put the cdi the drive and press enter when it prompts you to boot from cd in case it does not please change the boot sequence in bios to cd as the first boot device.
2. after the cd loads all the files on the first screen press "R" fro repair which takes you to the recovery console.
3. there it will ask you which windows installation would you like to log on to press " 1" and press "Enter"
4.Then It will ask you you for Adinistrator password please enter the password for the admin account or if haven't got a password just press "Enter"
5. Finally it shows a prompt 'C:\>" or "C:\WINDOWS>"
6.Over there Type "CHKDSK /R" (do not include any QUOTES"")
7.It will run a check and try to repair if it goes thru fine just restart the system and update me else you also will need to test the hard with the inbuilt diagnostic that dell provides.

Also if you could try the CTRL +F11 again and ensure that you do not tap the key too hard it should take you to the options were you can opt for the factory installed OS Recovery

Do you have the OS boot CD, if so you can do a refresh of your operating system. You need to press the F12 key that will allow you to boot to your OS and just follow the menu and allow it to replace your OS and leave your current settings. This will save your data. I am assuming you using Windows XP.

Also do not waste your money on registry cleaners. I only use ccleaner.com it is free and it works.

I hope this helps you.

Hi there.
Restart the machine and press F8 as it boots, it will take you to a sub menu, here you have 2 options, you can either choose "last known good configuration" or "safe mode".
Choose "last known good configuration" first, if that doesn't work repeat the steps and this time choose "safe mode" to performing a system restore. Take the PC back to a date before the errors happened.
Post back with any more problems

Good luck and thanks for using Fixya!!

    Hi again
Pop the CD in the drive, restart the PC and hit F2 to enter the bios utility, chose the CD drive as first boot device, hit F10 and save the changes, the PC will restart and it will boot from the CD drive follow the on-screen instructions for recovery.

    Good luck again

The cd writer /rom in which you r entering the disc must be not connected properly of its faulty.just try that same disc in any other pc and check it first.the cd must be proper.it may be the problem of the cd writer/rom.just replace that cd writer if that is the case.

I have a dell inspiron lap top with window's vista. There is a problem with it. Even when I turn it on with safe mode it goes to the log in screen, then says welcome, and then it goes to a black screen...

Usually what happens with my Dell Inspiron desktop, even on safe mode it goes to the logon screen. I have never experienced that with my Dell Inspiron 1318. When you log in and it shows you the black screen, try pressing the function buttons. Try F8 or F12. You should be able to start the computer in Safe Mode. If possible, enter Safe Mode with Networking so that you are able to search the web. If you don't mind me asking, why is it that you need safe mode? Is it a virus?

How do i change the configuration from domain to work group

even if you mistakenly joined a domain you can still log in through your existing id and password.
Once your press CTRL+ALT+DEL, you will see a login window with three fields namely: user id, password and Domain.
In the log in screen use the drop-down menu in front of Domain (which shows your new domain- most likey MSHome) and choose 'this computer'. After this, enter your old/existing user id and password and hit enter.
Please proceed to your system settings and change your domain back to Workgroup. Restart PC.

My Dell Inspiron 1525 wont load up

I'd suggest first removing your memory modules and reinsert one at a time.

But, I think your operating system is compromised, due to Spyware, etc.

Since your system won't boot in Safe Mode, your only other option is to repair or reinstall your operating system.

Hope this helps.

Dell Inspiron laptop will turn on but wont take me to log in screen

Since the laptop is in the 13 day exchange period i would suggest you go for a replacement PC cuz the OS is corrupt maybe cuz of a bad Hard Drive or bad installation... you could go ahead with a reinstall or use PC restore but then again it might be an continious issue later as well...

I changed the password on my Dell Inspiron 600m the other night and now I can't remember what I changed it to and now I'm locked out of my computer! Please can someone please . . . . help me?

Do you mean the password to log into Windows XP?

If so, right after you turn on the Laptop, start tapping the F8 key until you get a menu screen on a black background.

With the keyboard arrow keys, select Safe Mode and click Enter.

On the Windows Welcome Screen you should see your Windows account and a new Administrator account. Hopefully, no one set up a password on the built-in Administrator account. Click the Administrator account and click to log in with no (blank) password.

Windows will tell you that you are working in Safe Mode and click yes on that box (The screen will look considerably larger and your background will not show as Windows uses default video drivers in safe mode). Click start and go to Control Panel. On the left hand side click Classic View and then Double Click on the User Accounts Icon.

Click your account from the User Accounts window that opens and choose Change My Password or Remove My Passowd. After you have removed or changed your password, close all the Windows and Restart your computer normally. When you get to the Windows Welcome Screen, the Administrator account should not be listed anymore and you can select your account and log in with the New Password you created, or log in with a blank password if you chose to Remove My Password.

System won't log on

try safe mode. If it works, use system restore to go back to a previous working configuration. If safe mode does not work, try the last known-good configuration. Restart the computer, then as soon as the Dell logo shows up on the screen, press the F8 key repeatedly until you enter the Advanced Options Menu. Use the arrow keys to select Last Known-Good Configuration, then press Enter.
