PDP-5040HD Digital Audio Optical port does not work

Having looked at the TV, you will have a lot of problems trying to connect to that amp. The TV has a digital optical out output only. The disc player you mentioned will also be out only. You need a optical "in" for them both. The TV has no analogue out sockets. The only chance you might get any sound out is via the scart socket. If that is fully wired, then the scart might produce L&R analogue out. A scart plug with RCA connections (make certain it has both audio in and out) might produce some sound for the amp.
Otherwise no chance!

The amp you have was not made to work with digital signals. The TV will produce high quality Dolby 5.1 sounds. Assuming you get the scart to produce the sound, then you will only get stereo sound, little better than the TV itself!
I therefore recommend you get a decent digital amp that you connect all your future devices too. One that has HDMI connectors as well as at least two optical inputs.
Onkyo make some excellent models. For example this model would do the job Onkyo TXSR444 Home Cinema Receiver.

Refer its user manual for details. There should be a facility to most of Pioneer sets.

I would say no and parts are very unlikely to even be available for it due to its age.

The nature of whatever is on the upstream side of a digital signal is invisible to the device at the other end of the cable. Bits is bits, as we say. The undefined 'satelite to optical audio' device is probably at fault or not set right. PLUS, on theOnkyo you have to assign digital inputs. Read the manuals.

In your DVD player audio setup change the digital output to bitstream. You have not mentioned which DVD player you are using.

What type of connection does your optical drive have? If it is a SATA drive, use one of the four SATA ports.

If you have an IDE drive, this motherboard doesn't have an IDE connection on board. If you want to use this drive, you need an IDE to SATA converter, for example: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812232004&cm_re=ide_to_sata_converter-_-12-232-004-_-Product . This is for internal use. You could also get a PCI or PCIe IDE controller. These will work if you still have one of the PCIe slots available. (Some video cards may block the slots.)

There are also USB to IDE dongles or 5.25" enclosures that will work (best for non-slim optical drives).

I don't have a direct solution but I am having the same problem when connecting (1) my Apple TV (2) my Blu-Ray player, etc. via HDMI. I also have a digital camera that puts out HDMI, and when I hook it up, I get the same story -- video only, no sound through the optical digital output of the TV receiver.

I am guessing that the HDMI inputs were an afterthought on this model, especially since the printed manual doesn't even show or mention the HDMI inputs at all! So my guess is that the TV's receiver does not convert the sound from the HDMI to the optical digital output. It does, however, send the amplified HDMI sound to the stereo speaker outputs on the monitor. It appears that only the digital tuner's 5.1 sound comes out on the optical digital output.

This is what I have observed, for what it's worth.

The optical audio out from the TV only works for the TV's tuner, probably. Hook-up optical from Cable/SAT and from PS3 boxes to DVD/Receiver.

Receiver just receives the audio data over optical digital cable and processes it. It is up to the DirectTV box what will send to receiver (if stereo or some Dolby Digital for example).
You can check the format (decoder, no. of channels, bitrate) of current audio signal after pressing Option button on remote and choosing Signal Info menu.

You can use a PDPR06U if you can find one for sale its 2 generations later than your's. Look on Ebay. I might have one too but I got to look.
