Link Sys wireless G router, connects with laptop, not desktop

I have AT&T as DSL service provider.

I FINALLY got my laptop working to connect with my Link Sys wireless router. My desktop "sees" the connection, makes the connection, but cannot get to the internet.

It is set to WEP, not sure what else to do.

The laptop is on Windows VISTA, desktop, Windows XP if that matters. it worked fine before I moved and hooked into AT&T.

thanks in advance for any help! I need both PC's for my work

  • robininhisha Feb 17, 2009

i will try it and let you know..have to move my desktop back to the modem and that will take a little while. thanks so much!

  • robininhisha Feb 17, 2009

and you realized that my LAPTOP is connecting OK to the wireless router, but it's my DESKTOP (which is about 3 years old and upgraded memory) with Windows XP that is not connecting to the router.

it was prior to hooking up to AT&T software.

just wanted to be sure you knew that my laptio IS connecting OK

    thanks again!

Wireless Home network will not stay connected to internet

So you have a DSL modem connected to a router connected to a wireless router connected to both your computers? Sounds like you need to just get a wireless modem and throw all the routers away.

No internet connection

This should be connected as so. From wall outlet to DSL modem, from DSL modem to D-Link router, From D-Link router to Laptop via wireless or wired connection. You will still need the DSL modem installed but the wire coming from the DSL modem will go to uplink port on the router instead of into the laptop.

My desktop uses a DSL internet connection but my lap top will not pick up the signal from it to connect even when I have it sitting right next to my desktop. If I actually unplug yellow connection cord...

Having your laptop sitting next to your desktop will not let your laptop connect to the DSL link.

You need what's called a Wireless Router. (assuming your laptop has a wireless adapter, if not you'll need a network cable for that.

1. Go to the store, buy a wireless router
2. install router in between your DSL modem and the computer.
3. Plug the WAN port into the DSL modem (cable is usually included with the router)
4. Plug the desktop into the back of one of the ports of the wireless router
5. Run the setup disk
6. For manual configuration of the router you can usually go to: 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.2.1 depending on the brand)
7. If you don't know anything about networking, let the install disk do all the work.
8. Follow the instructions on what it tells you your configuration is for your wireless network.
9. Go to your laptop, apply said instructions.
10. ???
11. Profit.

Lan

Okay so if I understand your question....your desktop has DSL and you want to connect your laptop to the same DSL connection? If that is the case then what you need is a router. A router will share the DSL connection between the desktop and the laptop. A wireless router will allow your laptop to surf wirelessly if it has a wireless adapter or you can plug it into the ethernet port on the laptop. You can purchase one here. The instructions are pretty simple and straightforward and should be included with the router.

No internet connection on my laptops

Please understand as I get very basic to start but things very obvious to you I cannot see.

Generally when including a router in a home network starting from the cable (tv) or the phone socket (dsl) in the wall with a phone wire plugged in. The next box is generally provided by your internet service provider and is a modem/something that connects to the phone line or cable. Then sometimes when only one computer exists computers are directly connected to the modem with an ethernet cable (looks like a fat phone wire with oversize connectors) or a USB cable (small flat retangular ends).

When you want to add a router for multiple computers. The computer gets disconnected. If a USB cable was used it is often replaced with an ethernet cable and that cable connects to the WAN port (probably separate from a block of 4 lan ports) of the router you bought (tell me if you have two routers -- that is a different problem). If your service comes from a cable (tv) company your router may already be properly configured. If however you have DSL service from the phone company the chances your router is correctly configured are less. To finish with the cabling story -- your computer then hooks to one of probably 4 LAN ports all in a block. Now if you are lucky power on all devices and boot up your computer and see if you have internet access. If you do great if not please provide me the name of your internet service provider or a link to their help/support website and I will see what I can do to assist in completing the router setup. Until your wired computer gets access to the internet your girls wireless connections will not work either. Once we get the wired connection working we will address the wireless connections.
If necessary unplug the router and plug the computer back into the original cable until we get the router working.

Setting up a wireless router

first you have to check the ip address of the dsl modem you used and see to it that it is not the same ip address of the router to avoid conflict. the default ip address of dlink router is 192.168.0.1.if in case your dsl modem has the same ip address with the router, you have to change firs the ip address of the router before connecting the router to your dsl modem.
next you need to know your internet connection whether it is DYNAMIC or PPPOE, depending on how your internet provider configured your modem. for PPPOE connection, you have to know the USERNAME and PASSWORD that your provider provides you.
good luck.
