Unlock your card. you'll get that message when the SD card is locked.  Lock the card only to prevent deleting photos from it. good luck!

My camera wont take pix says slide lock to write position, when I do that it display "CHA" don't know what that means and still can't take pix

CHA also means the card cannot be used for other reasons. F.i. the card can be damaged. Try to format the card. That is, when you could use the card before. If you bought a new card, Make sure it is not a SDXC card, because your camera only allows MMC, SD and SDHC cards. If nothing helps, also look in the memory card holder, if nothing strange is in there, or the sensor that looks for the lock, is functioning correct. If you don't know how, please visit or contact a Nikon-Authorised service centre.

My D50 Nikon camera reads CHR I bought a new SD Card it is 4G can that to big

The D50 works with SD cards. Your 4GB card is actually an SDHC card. While it fits into the slot, it will only work with devices specifically designed to accept SDHC cards. The D50 wasn't. It only works with SD cards, 2GB and smaller.

I have a d90 nikon. Got the cha error first. Now the screen is a mess of black and grey lines. Is this camera toast.

Hi, Your camera shouldn't be toast, the cha error can be caused by many things. First thing you'll want to do is remove the lens you currently have on it. Then what you'll want to do is hold down the two buttons that have green dots on top of them (they're located on the top of the camera) for 5 seconds, this restores the camera to factory. After that you'll want to go into the menu and then custom controls and then hit reset. That should fix the error most of the time however it can also be caused by certain memory cards. In that case you'll want to save all photos off of the memory card onto a computer and reformat the memory card. If neither of those work for you let me know and I can try and help you troubleshoot more =)

What does CHA mean

Nikon says this about CHA:

When a Memory card is inserted into a D-SLR camera, the camera checks the card for compatibility and usability. There are three possible results of the test:

1) Camera detects valid Memory card, displays number of remaining images in top LCD

2) Camera displays "FOR" in top control panel LCD. The camera has detected a valid disk partition map, but was unable to read the first sector of the Memory Card. Formatting the memory Card using the cameras format option, should resolve this condition and allow the Memory card to be used.

3) Camera displays "CHA" in top LCD. The camera has detected an invalid partition type or is not working properly. Reformatting the memory card may allow it to be used. If an approved memory card causes the camera to display the "CHA" indicator contact the memory cards manufacturer for assistance.

(Nikon's list of "approved" memory cards can be found here.)

Please note that the default disk format used in Windows XP is FAT32 and if a card is formatted with this setting on an XP system, a D1 series camera will report "CHA". Reformat the card as "FAT" to use in the D1 series camera.

When the CHA error is shown, typically the camera will freeze and require that the battery be removed from the camera before it can take another picture. After that picture has been taken, the camera freezes up again for many owners.

Some owners have success removing and either re-seating or inserting a new memory card in the camera.

Some owners have success clearing the error by removing the lens and then reinstalling.

The key to these "fixes" is that they don't all work for everyone. You might need to return the camera to Nikon for repair. You can arrange for Nikon service here.

CHA flashing on readout screen. Battery is fully charged. What does CHA mean?

If there are brackets around the CHR, it means the card is locked. SD cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card. If the switch is already in the proper position, slide it fully the other way and then back again.

If there are no brackets around the CHR, it means the camera cannot read your memory card. Try a different card.

Error msg CHR flashing how to get it to turn off, inserted new memory card, even in off position continues to flash. D90

Format the memory card. Press and hold the two [FORMAT] buttons until "For" blinks on the top display. Release the two buttons and then press the same two buttons again.

Camera works with standard SD memory card, but not SDHC

There are hardware incompatibilities between SD and SDHC cards. They're upward compatible in that SDHC devices will accept SD cards but not the other way around. You will have to hunt down SD cards, 2GB and smaller.

Today I removed my Sandisk memory card from my Nikon D300 before going on a photo job to replace it with an empty one but couldn't get the new one to go in-or the one I had just removed. The camera shows...

CHA error message means that the memory card is unusable. You should format the card by inserting it in a card reader or try another card.

Let me know if you need more help,
Sai.

D50 cannot use a 4gb card??? I use 1gb, 2 gb and no issues, now bought a 4gb card and get a CHA indicator on camera and will not shoot pictures. Can this camera be programed to accept a 4gb or larger...

No, the D50 will not (as you've discovered) accept an SDHC memory card (anything bigger than 2gb is SDHC). I haven't found a firmware upgrade for the D50 to rectify this issue, either. I own a D50 also, and love it, but bigger cards would be nice.
