GE refrigerator 12 years old runs continuously, exterior warm

I have noticed that the fridge seems to run continuously. The exterior is very warm in a couple of areas near the freezer. The freezer fan is blowing cold air. The fridge temp seems OK .. set at 3 .. mid-way. I have pulled out the fridge and vacuumed off the coils and underneath as best I could. The fridge does turn off and on when I manually turn the dial. Should I be worried that it is running most of the time?

Probably not. Newer (and I mean under 15 years old or so) refrigerators may run more % of the time than older units, but are using far less energy while running, so total energy consumption is actually less. The newest energy star models often use less electricity than a single incandescent light bulb uses if left on 24/7. If your run times are noticeably longer just recently, and there have been no other significant changes to account for it (like more and / or longer door openings or a warmer ambient temp., etc.) then you may have caught a defrost problem or bad door gasket problem early. The warm temp on the outer case near the freezer is to prevent condensation from forming in those areas, and is normal. (as a matter of fact, older refrigs often used low wattage electric heaters for that task, almost all newer units use waste heat from the cooling system to accomplish that task) Please don't bother rating this solution, as anything but a Fix-Ya lowers my overall score. Thanks.

Whirlpool side by side not cooling

The round object is the compressor. Is it running continuously, or is it clicking on and off every 2 or 3 minutes? There also should be a fan beside compressor. Is it running? Also check Fan in freezer to see if it is running. Is there any frost build up on inside back freezer wall? If fans are working and compressor is running continuously and there is no frost buildup in freezer, then you most likely have a sealed system problem meaning its low on freon or there is a blockage in system.

OK check the Thermistor, the actual temperature sensor element, and or thermostat if it uses a separate feed.

I have a GE profile refregerator, model PDS22MCRBWW (s/nTG042045). It has the fridge on top and freezer on bottom (pull out drawer). It is now a little over 6 years old and has had continuous use since...

Warm sides on the fridge
It's usually caused by the condenser fan which is underneath around back. If it's not running when the compressor runs it will cause the problem you describe. You will need to remove the cardboard backing on the back of the fridge to access the fan.
Here's how to test the fan.

GE side by side not cooling properly/outside surface hot

please check the condenser fan motor. it is probably not running or the condenser is very dirty.

remove the rear cover and it will show you the compressor and the condenser fan.
if the fan is not running, try to rotate it manually and feel if it is sticking .

if it is, it may just need the old wd 40 lubricant.

tnx 4 using fixya,

Fridge and freezer warm at top, colder but not normal on lower shelves

How old is this frig? If it is older that 12-15 years, get a new one. Make sure there is not blockage to keep the air from circulating properly. The vent from the freezer to the cooler should also be free from blockage as well.
