No sound coming out the headphones

SONY WM-D6C : All new ... but I put the tape in, plug in the earphones and ... no sound coming out.
Fresh batteries, changed tapes and also changed the headset to check if the fault was coming from the tape, the earphones, the quality of the batteries.
No sound, no sound, no sound.

What am I doing wrong ? HELP :-)

Make sure it’s the headphone jack not the microphone jack.

Hello. The audio works on 12vdc whereas everything else works on 6vdc. There is a little 6 to 12 volt inverter inside the unit. Pull off the back then take thescrews out that hold on the main board and fold it back. You will see a little silver can above where the battery goes. The board comes out fairly easily. Remove the can from the board and replace the tantalum caps inside it. Measure there is 6 vdc going in and 12 vdc coming out. Could still be the audio ic but this is a common problem. In fact, if you are repairing anything that has tantalums in it then replace them before going further, will save much sweat and heartache.

Try the line out on the back of the unit and see if sound signal comes out there U must plug that into a preamp on your stereo the signal level is to low for the headphones to sound and if there is sound then u have a blown output amp in the headphones circuit!

Sony Walkman cassette tape player operating at slower speed

If this is the WMD6C then it is servo locked and can be fine tuned with the pitch control on the back of the unit just turn the switch to on then adjust to preferred speed.

Plays too fast

WMD6C has a pitch control on the back of the unit that can change the speed of the tape, so switch it off, but if that is not the problem then inside the unit it has a servo set speed pot on the main board.
