Freezer side door opens when large refrgerator door is closed

We have a model msd2454grw side by side refrigerator we bought at LOWE'S. It was purched 11/05/01. When the large refrigerator door is pushed closed the freezer door opens and stays open unless it is noticed that is open and is pushed closed. I have cleaned the perimeter of the freezer door and around the gasket but it still happens. It appears that if the door is held closed by a magnet it has somehow gotten weaker. Please provide a solution as we have alredy lost food because it thawed when we did not notice the freezer door was open when we went on vacation.

Gd5sha water under the freezer

This normally occurs when you have a large buildup of ice in the freezer, when it does a defrost there is just too much water for the hat on the compressor to handle. Make sure the door to the freezer & fridge is closing properly & the seal is in good condition & not falling off, moisture in the air causes frost in a freezer. So too many door openings can cause the same problem.

My freezer door pops open everytime i shut my refrigerator door

Good day,
First, make sure the gasket including the bottom is clean, as well as the mating surface of the machine itself.
The machine itself should be checked for being level. Side to side, if it's a top freezer model, the hinge side cannot be lower than the other side.
As well, front to back it should be leveled but with a slight tilt to the rear to assist in closing.
If none of this helps, then the magnets in the gasket itself have gotten weak and the gasket needs replaced.

Notes: Heavier items keeped in the freezer door will help to a degree. Closing the door slower as well.

The reason this happens, is that with the main door open, then closed, a large volume of air is forced into the fresh food compartment. There are vents that are open between the freezer section and fresh food compartment. This large volume of air when closing the main door is compressed into a smaller area, causing the problem.

Our side by side freezer door opens slightly

That is a common occurrance for side by side refrigerators. Closing the fresh food door is like having your car windows closed and closing the door. You can feel the air pressure on your ears. In the refrigerator, the air passes through the duct and into the freezer pushing the door open. The magnet on the door gasket should keep it closed. But it may be the freezer door needs the hinges adjusted to the door seats better when closed. Take the plastic cover off the top hinge and you can loosen the screws (don't take them out) and adjust the door slightly (so it looks even between both doors) and tighten the screws up. The top of the door should be level with the top of the unit, and the gap between the doors even the whole way down.

I opened the door on GE Profile side by side refrigerator this morning. Not only was the the refrigerator not blow cool air. It was actully blowing hot air, it was like opening the oven. The temperature on...

Check if it is still under warranty - I think that it is usually 2 years.

When in this condition, was the compressor still running ?
There was one issue that occurred occasionally on some models - the fridge door has a height adjustment so you can level the 2 doors up. Sometimes, it drops a bit too much, and on models with the fridge door light switch on the top (not the side), it meant that it wasn't turning off the light. Some have 2 lamps (commonly 40W or more each), so you effectively have 80Watts or more of heating running constantly. If your (exact) model has the door switch on the side, this is Unlikely to be the issue.

If the compressor was not running, I could say something like "it might have got stuck in a defrost cycle", but this DOESN'T really fit with the operation of these fridges (no defrost elements in the fridge side).
Does this help in any way ??

We have an Amana side by side. The freezer door

hi. First of all, finding the model number can be a bit of a challenge. here are the places to look:
  • Inside the refrigerator or freezer, on the upper left or right side wall
  • Behind the lower crisper drawer
  • Behind the lower toe kick-plate
  • On the face frame of the refrigerator body

Freezer door opens when you shut the refrigerator door

Adjust the front legs of your refrigerator slightly to raise the refrigerator. and and store items on the freezer door shelves to add weight. This is a problem of pneumatics and a testament to how tight newer refrigerators are. When you close the large refrigerator door it compresses the air in the refrigerator compartment. Both compartments are connected by air passages and thus the pressure change is transferred to the freezer causing the freezer door to pop open.

Raising the front of the refrigerator a tiny bit will help both doors close from the 90 degree point, which is desirable. Adding weight to the shelf will just help the process.

An additional aid in self-closure will be to use vegetable oil on a paper towel to wipe down the hinge side face of both door seals. All these maneuvers should aid in causing the door to stay closed and re-close if it should open slightly. Good Luck

    LG bottom freezer

Sounds like the refrigerator is sitting lopsided.  Make sure that the front legs are both retracted in the up position.  If it doesn't work, then lower the front leg on the hinge side of the refrigerator.  That will cause the frame to lift the door and it should be able to close properly.
