2004 Chevy Tahoe - Driver side front tire - sounds like it is grinding when I lift the tire and spin the wheel by hand. This morning, leaving my house I heard a clunk noise. I immediately stopped and check for anything broken or hanging down (it sounded like something broke), but I couldn't see anything. When I started driving (slowly) again. I could hear a scraping sound and it felt like the brakes were sticking... I added a little gas and as the Tahoe moved, it felt like the momentum "broke" lose the brakes. I stopped and check the outside of the Tahoe again, but nothing. I check the brakes and they worked just fine. When I started moving again (under 5mph), it would happen again. I can shift to drive and take my foot off the brake pedal and the Tahoe would roll forward about 5 feet then stop (as if I pressed the brake pedal). When I would give it some gas, it would "break" loose and then I would roll another 5-10 feet and then it would "brake" again. Any ideas?

Normally the axle does have some end play. A bad bearing usually will give you rumbling noise and have up and down play if it's bad enough.Normally the seal will leak as well. Before you begin taking everything apart, get under there and put your hand on the axle tube nearest the brakes and try to feel where the noise is coming from while someone moves the bed. Listen carefully as well and check anything and everything for movement. The "hand on it" method will allow you to feel as well as hear the shift. I'm almost betting it's not the bearing.

You didn't say what the shop checked so I may be repeating something they already looked at. Check the brake caliper and I would also drain the old brake fluid and put in new fluid. You didn't mention if it was making any noise when this happens so I'll assume it's not a problem with your wheel bearings.

Good Evening, those noises can be annoying and sometimes hard to find. However it sounds like you have a front hub assembly going bad. Usually the noise goes away when you veer one direction or the other. I have heard some transfer case noises but they usually do not go away on turns. Check those front hub-wheel bearing assemblies and see what you come up with. Hope this points you in the right direction.

The ABS has nothing to do with your brakes as you put it
It is the Wheel Speed Sensors and other components,
not the rotor, pads, etc There is no computer attachment
there as you understand
All check lights etc have to come from hard wired OBD2
(1996 thru2011) Systems reporting to ECM,PCM's etc,
some kind of module
We live in an Electronic Automotive World, not an Auto
Computer World.
With the noise, you could have a bad Wheel Hub Assy,
and also sensor.
Get the codes from the system, whenever any light comes
on,then you have to diagnose that system
Codes do not tell what is wrong or what to replace
Your wheels on any vehicle, wont turn the way you are checking them
as the pinion gears in the diff, as well as other 4x4 features
seem to prevent it. Poor explaination, turn yes, free both side,no
