It should take 2.5 IDE HDD up to 80Gb without any problem, bigger than this might not work but it should be able to run 120Gb but I have not tried. MURRAY the MAGNIFIENT

Yes you need to install the operating system back to your computer and you also need to install the drivers and the programs on it. New hard drives are blank. After installing everything up, don't forget to add a premium anti-virus. That's very important. You should also add a tech software like RadarSync so that you won't have to worry about getting your computer's drivers updated.
You should back up your files regularly and be prepared to purchase a new hard drive and install Windows on the new hard drive etc. when the hard drive eventually fails.
Apparently most of the Mp3 players use a common garden variety Lap Top Hard Drive like a Toshiba etc. I have a Friend who replaced his in a Creative Zen. So Either take it a a reputable Laptop repair firm or simply pull the back off and check it out yourself. I haven't down this yet because I am still trying to Back up the contents of my H320 before it fails completely. When you pull the back off it should have a small hard drive just clipped into it using a wiring connection similar to a Laptop. Find the numbering and get a compatible replacement. The you may need to download a Firmware update as an exe file from IRiver and put this in the bas directory of the H320 and run it. THis sets up the necessary software. You may even be able to put in a larger hard drive 40 or 60 gb as they are all the same price depending on your budget. Let me know how it goes as I will be doing the same job shortly.
