Sometimes, your calculator gets into a funny mode. Maybe your sister was using it, and she set it to do parametric equations, and you have no idea what that means but you do know that it isn't behaving normal. Whenever students come to me and complain that the calculator is acting funny, here's what I do.

  1. Hit MEM (you do this by hitting the yellow 2nd key, and then hitting +).
  2. This brings up a menu. Use the down arrow key to scroll to the word RESET and hit ENTER.
  3. You are now asked if you want to reset "all memory" or just "defaults." Either one will generally work. The former is stronger, but it also clears out any games you may have downloaded.
  4. You are now asked if you really want to do this. Tell it that yes, you really do.
This returns your calculator to a sort of pristine virgin state. I don't know what was wrong with it before, but it should be gone now. If that doesn't work, try dumping the batteries out, waiting for a minute or so, and then putting them back.

My TI-84 calculator says "Garbage Collecting" and won't work, how should I reset it?

Found at www.epsstore.ti.com

What can be done if a TI-83 Plus family or TI-84 Plus family calculator displays Garbage Collecting... for more than 20 minutes?

The garbage collection allows the cleanup of unused archive memory. It deletes unarchived variables from the user data archive and it rearranges the remaining variables into consecutive blocks. When a variable is unarchived, the Archive free memory amount increases immediately, but the space is not actually available until after the next garbage collection.

If garbage collecting is more than 20 minutes, the calculator has possibly locked up and will need to be reset.

The reset procedure will delete all the items that are in the memory of the graphing calculator. Use the reset procedure below:
• Remove 1 AAA battery.
• Press and hold down the [DEL] key.
• While holding down the [DEL] key, replace the AAA battery, and press the [ON] Key.

The message Waiting... Please install calculator software should appear. At this point, it will be necessary to reinstall the calculator's operating system.
• Connect the calculator to the computer using the TI Connectivity Cable or DirectUSB Cable.

Please post if this was helpful...
• In Windows®, click on Start >> Programs >> TI Tools >> TI Connect >> TI OS Downloader.
• In MacOS® X, open Hard Drive >> Applications >> TI Connect >> TI OS Restore.
• Follow the directions on screen to reinstall the calculator's operating system.
Access the link following for detailed instructions on how to complete operating system installation.

My TI-84 Plus SE is stuck on the "Garbage Collection" screen. Is there any way to fix this?

Hello,
Press [2nd][QUIT]. If that does not work, remove the main batteries. Wait a little while, then insert them back again. It will attempt to continue garbage collection but will say Ram cleared. Clear the screen ant start using calculator.

Hope it helps.

Frozen ti 84 plus silver edition

Ther is no reset button. You have to take the batteries out.

Take the AAA batteries out and take the back up battery out...located in a little door with a screw just above the AAA batteries. Leave the batteries out for about 8 hours. This is how you reset a TI graphing calculator.

My calculator is stuck on garage collecting. How do i fix?

That's "Garbage Collecting"...It will take it a LONG time to finish this. Let it sit for as long as it needs to in order to finish this task. Unless you want it to move slowly. If worse comes to worse, take the batteries out and let it sit for an hour or so, then replace the batteries.

When I replaced the batteries in my TI-84 plus the screen now reads "garbage collecting" and nothing works. Any suggestions?

Whenever my calculator has said that, it usually takes a long time, especially if you haven't garbage collected in a while. I don't see why it wouldn't stop eventually, but if it seems like it never will, take out all the batteries and the back up battery behind the door with the screw. Leave them out for like a whole day. When you replace them it should reset your calculator.

I need help plz

The Garbage collect may go for 20 minutes or longer... wait a while. If that doesn't work, take out all the batteries and let it sit for 3 hours.

Garbage Collecting

graphing calulators work much like computers. The have RAM space so they can remember what you have done recently and stuff like that. So when it's garbage collecting it means it's trying to find more space. This generally means that you don't have much much ARC or RAM space left. You can see this under your memerory manager. (2nd + enter) then you can reset your calculaor(2nd plus 7 1 2) or you can go to memory manager and unarchive your programs. Fur an example you have TI 84. Most new TI 84 have sientific tools. so if you don't you it take away the archive (*) by pressing enter and then hit DEL. the more RAM space and ARC space should make it so it doens't garababe collect. Hope this works. i can help you more if this doesn't work. GOOD LUCK

Garbage collecting

I had the same problem. Here's whutcha do: You know that USB cable that came with your calculator that hooks up to your computer? You're gonna need it. First, take out one battery from your calculator. Then hold down the DEL button. Whilst holding it down, re-insert the battery. Now turn the calculator on. Hooray! It doesn't say Garbage Collecting anymore! Now it says "Waiting... Please install operating system now." Now you hook up your calculator to your computer with that cable. Go into TI CONNECT (if you don't have it, download it at TI's official website), and transfer the newest OS (also available at TI website). Now your calculator is working again. Woohoo.
